A Must-Have Book for the under 5 crowd,
By "catiek" (Madison, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Big Black Bear (Paperback)
My two daughters (aged 4 and 5) say this is their favorite book. We've been reading it over and over since they were babies. They love the naughty big black bear who turns out to be a child just like them (and is forgiven in the end, of course). The rhyming text is very catchy ("come in, please, wipe your paws on the mat...I'm a big black bear, I don't have to do that"). Don't let your kids grow up without reading this and the other Wong Herbert Yee books!

Delightful!,
This review is from: Big Black Bear (Hardcover)
Your child may be shocked by the poor manners of the bear who barges into the girl's house. This bear thinks he is one tough cookie...that is, until his mommy sneaks in and sees how he is misbehaving. My 3 year old loves this story. The illustrations are terrific and the story will reinforce good manners. Everytime we read this story, my son says "Mommy, that is a bad bear". Waht a delight! Highly recommended.

Preschoolers love this book!!,

This review is from: Big Black Bear (Paperback)
This book is terrific! My three children have all loved it. My 2-year-old twins have memorized its silly, bouncy, rhyming text, and it still has appeal for my five year old. I have given it as a gift to two other families, who have searched for other copies to pass on to their friends. You can't go wrong with this book. (An added plus -- the child who isn't afraid of "Big Black Bear" is a girl.)

A scary, silly tale,

This review is from: Big Black Bear (Paperback)
My 3-year-old girl got this for her birthday, and just loves it. It's a bit scary, as the bear misbehaves, but it's also silly, and she enjoys seeing him get his come-uppance. The rhymes are fun, too. The art is a bit crude, but the story is very enjoyable.

My first graders LOVE this book! They begged to hear it again and again. It has a fun rhythmic story line that the kids love to repeat, and the pictures are really fun. They also wanted to act out the story. I'm going to get a few of these books as holiday gifts! A must-have!

This review is from: Big Black Bear (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (School & Library Binding)
This book has been a family favorite for 8 years now. I buy this book for many other families as a gift. I also used the book in a classroom where we ALL had the book memorized. However, the recent School and Library Bound edition that we ordered from Amazon has a very poor print color. The cover is very faded. I am disappointed- have never had this problem ordering this book from any other source.

Beneath the Bully: Big Black Bear,
This review is from: Big Black Bear (Paperback)
Snappy rhyme and funky, expressive illustrations tell a quick and entertaining tale of boundaries, bad behaviour and the baby inside the bully. Our girls are just as tickled by this book now, at ages 5 and 7, as they were during its billions of readings in their toddler years.

My daughter LOVES this book and it's a bedtime favorite. Great artwork, kinetic style. We've been working on please and thank you, and this book brings it all home in a cute, engaging way. Beware though- at the zoo last weekend she yelled at the black bear "NO MANNERS AT ALL!" and told me he was trouble :)

Great book for any preschooler!,

This is a hilarious book! My daughter is 3 and she loved the fact that the misbehaving bear is her age. We read this book so much that she took over the part of the little girl's voice. It can be a little scary during the first read, because the bear implies he wants to "eat" her, but like other little kids, he's just all bluster when he can't get what he wants. So, for the first couple of reads, I inserted the word "tickle" for "eat", and read the book in a normal voice, just in case. Now, I act out the bear in a growly voice, with the "eat" word, of course, and she screams and laughs.
Don't worry, the bear's mother comes along to remind him to use his manners in the end! It also reminds my daughter to use her "please" and "thank you"! LOL. |
