Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Even if you're not the type to spend your life savings on an Everest ascent, you'll still appreciate the wild and exhilarating exploits described here. This comprehensive sourcebook lists more than 400 organized adventure trips around the world. Neatly divided into two sections, "Land Adventures" and "Water Adventures," the book is jam-packed with enough bike tours, backpacking trips, dogsledding excursions, and kayaking trips that even the most jaded thrill seekers will learn a thing a two. Just a few of the trips mentioned in the "Land" chapter include a trek to the isolated Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan and cycling through New Zealand. The "Water" chapter features rafting the Zambezi River and canoeing in Alaska. Each entry lists the basics: when the trip is offered, duration, price, type of lodging, and contact info (including Web sites). Interwoven are profiles of tour company owners, whose tales of wanderlust will surely inspire you to pack your Gore-Tex and go. If that's not enough enticement, each operator has included a coupon in the back of the book offering five-to-ten percent discounts on future trips. --Jill Fergus

From Library Journal

More and more Americans are opting for vacations that offer challenge and risk over holiday travel that is sedate and predictable. Simmons (Castaway in Paradise, Sheridan, 1993) writes for the reader who is interested in running Chile's Bio-Bio River, biking Utah's Kokopelli Trail, or studying mountain gorillas in Rwanda, for example. He describes nearly 400 vacations that span seven continents, as well as the major oceans and seas of the world. His tantalizing guide is divided into sections on land and water adventures; each section is further divided into major types of activities; and the individual trips representing each activity are presented by geographical region. The author provides the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of each trip operator, in addition to the trip's price category and the preferred season of travel. Indexes and discount coupons follow the text. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars From trekking in Nepal, to cycling the french wine country, January 4, 2003
This review is from: The Big Book of Adventure Travel (Paperback)
Now in an updated and expanded fourth edition, The Big Book Of Adventure Travel by author and world traveler, James C. Simmons is an impressive compendium of more than four hundred organized adventure trips at home and abroad. From trekking in Nepal, to cycling the french wine country, to exploring the wreck of the Titanic, to white-water rafting on Africa's Zambezi River, to sea-kayaking among the orcas off British Columbia, to windjamming along the Maine coast, these are trip destinations and thrill-of-a-lifetime activities accessible to anyone. There are vacation ideas suitable for the entire family, honeymoon ideas far superior to a mundane trip to Niagra Falls, and a wealth of notions for the solo adventurer. Packed from cover to cover with the trip descriptions, details, reviews, resources, and operator profiles, The Big Book Of Adventure Travel is ideal for the novice and offers a wealth of indispensable information for even the experienced traveler.
