5.0 out of 5 stars I'll Drink to That
The Big Book O' Beer; the title says it all. I recieved this precious gem as a gift and I am proud to own this intelligent, witty, and surprisingly informative conglomerate of beer facts. For those who consider themselves beer fanatics to those who indulge in a few barley pops every now and again, I highly encourage you to get your hands on a copy of this book. The only...

2.0 out of 5 stars GOOD SUBJECT, BUT . . . .
I'm sorry, Mr. Swierczynski, but, much as I love beer, I fund your book both superficial and a sophomoric.

Maybe it's because I worked in the industry, briefly, back in the 70's when the big breweries were gobbling each other up and decimating the ranks of the regionals. Beer is a fascinating subject, because it has been so ubiquitous over the years and...

This review is from: The Big Book o' Beer: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Greatest Beverage on Earth (Paperback)
A great book for any beer drinker, be he connoisseur, brewer or armchair quarterback. It's a fun read, with anecdotes, history and all your favorite quotes from TV and media. It leaves you wanting more, a feat for books of this nature. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys either the finest cheap beer to those incredibly bizarre microbrews.

An outstanding, and often funny, book by one of my favorite authors. If you liked this one, check out some of his other books.

Seriously, one of the best young writers of this generation. And I'm not just saying this because of the great brew in my hand.

I'm sorry, Mr. Swierczynski, but, much as I love beer, I fund your book both superficial and a sophomoric.

Maybe it's because I worked in the industry, briefly, back in the 70's when the big breweries were gobbling each other up and decimating the ranks of the regionals. Beer is a fascinating subject, because it has been so ubiquitous over the years and because it has taken so many shapes and forms. The book only whetted my appetite for more information in so many areas and then didn't provide it. The title, "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know . . ." promised more, then didn't deliver. Perhaps if you promoted it as an introductory work, the reader would expect less.

The sophomoric part of my evaluation primarily refers to your constant commentary about "getting hammered" or otherwise over-indulging. We've all done it, of course, but a true beer lover doesn't drink it to get drunk. The whole thing makes you sound like a frat rat rather than an adult.

You are right about one thing -- it's the greatest beverage in the world, and has been for a long time.
