Building Block Quilts,
By Possum (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Big Book of Building Block Quilts (Paperback)
1. 3D deigns using the Super 60 special tool for cutting ease. 25 patterns for blocks and quilts in black 'n white and colour samples. A technical book for intermediate to advanced quilters.
2. Detailed cutting instructions at front of book with diagrams to make shapes, thus each pattern is concise with instructions in using the shapes to create the quilt only. Clear fabric cutting table and construction diagram, with directions for one size only. 3. Some will lend themselves to scrap fabrics, whereas others are enhanced with a more formal apporach to colour, value and shades. 4. There are no set-in seams and the methods are much easier than past construction techniques. 5. A good book for the quilter looking for inspiration and something different, especially with a 3D effect. 6. I may not have bought the book if I'd realised I would need a special tool to follow the instructions and this needs to be clearly indicated at point of sale. 4 stars.

Beautiful 3D quilts with no set-in seams!,
By
This review is from: ABC 3-D Tumbling Blocks... and More! (Paperback)
I bought a copy of this book just before taking a workshop from the author, Marci Baker. The quilts are beautiful, and much easier than using the traditional method. I made the first quilt, a Thankful Harvest, with a center of tumbling blocks set on a black background, so it looks like the blocks float. Marci is an excellent writer and an excellent teacher. I highly recommend her books and her classes. You will definitely need one of the clearview triangles to make the quilts in this book. The book includes a number of variations on tumbling blocks, and some other 3D designs as well. There are a lot of diagrams, and the directions are very clear. The author also includes quilting diagrams.

Perhaps it's due to budgetary constraints but I wish many of these pattern books were spiral bound and would lie flat on the table. As far as the pattern book goes, I bought this book to make a quilt for my teenage son. So far the pattern is easy to read and understand for a new quilter. I'm still stripping the pieces for the top but we're happy with the results so far. The book made it here in a timely manner so I thank the folks for that as well. Overall, I would recommend this book to a quilter that was looking for a project for her teenage sons or for someone that likes a more modern piece.

My husband bought this for me for my birthday. I can not wait to get started on the quilt. It makes something so confusing (to me anyway) so easy anyone could do the tumbling block with these instructions. I want to do the "open" block. Thank you so much Marci Baker! You are one of my favorites!

The book is most helpful for making a Tumbling Block quilt. Made quick work of a usually time consuming project. Book contains other projects that I can't wait to try.

Method terrific the book NOT SO GOOD,
By newfilter (Central California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ABC 3-D Tumbling Blocks... and More! (Paperback)
The method used in this book is a dream. The organization of the book is a nightmare just about the worst I have ever seen. The strip assembly directions are in the section with the patterns, the triangle cutting directions are in the back of the book and I have yet to find the directions for the pieces to set the blocks in. There are no fabric requirements stated for those setting blocks. Unfortunately this book seems to have been written to sell rulers and other quilting notions. On top of all of that my book came with SEVERAL CORRECTIONS taped to the inside cover, for a quilting instruction book that really does not work. Hopefully no one will cut before they check the note on the updates! While the book layout could be lots better the art work is very nice and that is about the only portion of the book I can recommend. If you are a beginner steer I'd say clear of this book, I am not a beginner and this book is proving to be a struggle.
