Editorial Reviews

Review

The Big Book moves…across the continent from east to west…Bill Slavin’s inimitable watercolours, supplemented by black-and-white and colour photographs, add their own touch of whimsy to this excellent addition to school or home bookshelf.”
The Globe and Mail

“…this book provides readers with a wealth of information…what sets [it] apart from the rest is the inclusion of little-known interesting facts…A valuable resource for any library or classroom…Highly Recommended.”
CM Magazine

“… an outstanding book… [I]llustrations…complement the text and add great visual appeal for the readers… Presented in a style which will appeal to the younger reader, it will also be welcomed by older readers and even adults. The information is accurate and well-researched…This book can be used in Canadian social studies programs at the elementary, junior high and high school levels. It will be welcomed by teachers and students alike. It is highly recommended as a purchase for school and public libraries or as an addition to family collections about Canada.”
Resource Links

“This is a big book and an excellent addition to classroom and library resources…it is an intelligent and well-researched book that is insightful and interesting.”
Children’s Book News

“…no current text matches its depth and breadth. Though written for ages eight and up, Moore’s text will engross readers much younger and older, making it an excellent family as well as library resource…For once, Canada’s writers and artists get plenty of attention, and teachers in particular will appreciate the list of suggested fiction about each territory.”
Quill & Quire

“…LOTS of information…is presented in a clear, straightforward manner.”
Toronto Families

“…it is 256 pages of important and quirky facts about different parts of the country…Parents are quite likely to find themselves thumbing through this beautifully illustrated book…Dedicated young readers will devour it from cover to cover, others will flip through, stopping where fancy leads and others will treat it as a reference book. In all cases it makes a lovely, lasting gift.”
The New Glasgow Evening News

“…an encyclopedia with a sense of fun.”
The Ottawa Citizen

The Big Book of Canada does a wonderful job of displaying the country ‘as a collection of neighbourhoods with personalities.’…It is full of photos and delightful illustrations…This is indeed a big book, with a delightful approach to the celebration of a great country in the variety and diversity of all its neighbourhoods…an excellent and entertaining resource…”

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but I needed to supplement, May 7, 2009
This review is from: The Big Book of Canada: Exploring the Provinces and Territories (Hardcover)
This book is a great overview of information about each province/territory of Canada. It has info in bite sized chunks, and nice illustrations.
I will definitely be using it as a homeschool resource - a "Dip in and find out" type book.
I was really wanting something a bit more compellingly written to read aloud to my kids, however, and have since bought "Kids Can Press Book of Canadian History" which covers all that this book is weaker on.
I am still glad I bought the book.
