I really love this book and have found that children; those that have an ounce of curiosity and/or creativity in them, are quite fond of this one too. This one has been around a few years and is actually three books in one....Tell Me Why Numbers 1, 2, and 3. If I am not mistaken, these books were first published in 1986.

Now there is one VERY IMPORTANT thing to note here. This product page has designated this book as suitable for "Baby through Pre-School." I am not at all sure who came up with that bit of fantasy, but this book is geared more for kids 4th grade through high school. The actually reading level of this thing is at about mid 7th grade level; the same level most adult popular novels are written.

As the books touts on its cover, there are answers to literally hundreds of questions children will ask, or would ask if they knew enough about the subject to ask a question if they did. Those looking for books on a specific subject need look elsewhere as the questions here are rather random in nature and certainly do not cover every subject in the known universe. I had to smile when I saw that another reviewer, at another site, gave this book low marks because his grandson never asked any of the questions found in this book. I shook my head when I saw others give bad reviews because they "could not find anything in this book they did not already know and that in general, they found it all boring. Hmmm. Go figure.

The book is broken down into three general areas. They include Our World, How Things Began, The Human Body, How other Creatures Live and How things are Made.

Each question asked is quite precise:

How big is the universe?
Who invented shoes?
Why doesn't an igloo melt inside?
What is regeneration?

This book is an invaluable resource for teachers, homeschoolers, parents, and others faced with the innumerable "why's" coming from children. It can also teach adults a thing or two!

Each answer is short and to the point--less than one page in length. The reader can learn about such things as the origins of the metric system, the origins of April Fool's Day, the invention of elevators and typewriters, the presidential faces on Mount Rushmore, and much more. One chapter even addresses questions about love and romance.

Most of the content is science-related, making it especially useful for science teachers. The chapter on the human body discusses things such as cancer. Other chapters address questions about various living things, such as rattlesnakes and jellyfish. Still others correct misconceptions about such things as poisonous mushrooms, color-blindness in animals, hyenas, and the construction of igloos.

A detailed index allows for handy reference and cross-reference of topics.

I bough this book as one of my 4th grade S. E. student request. We have been reading a page or two, and talking about the reading almost every day. It has some interesting subjects. My students enjoy the reading and gives me something to give my kids to think about. I really love this book

This is a book that my father bought me in parts when originally published (it was in 5 volumes.. some say 6).

The "big book" is a consolidated version of the five volumes, although it does not have all the questions covered in original volumes. Still, it is enough information to get started on a topic a young teenager would be interested in.

I gave it as a gift to a friend's son, but quickly skimmed through the book. Only thing disappointing is the print quality and paper.

I intended this for kindergarten age children because they are the ones who constantly say, "Tell me why, Grandma." However, the book is meant for older children who are satisfied to read the answers. I found the book to lack pictures that would make it interesting to the 5-8 aged children, the age group I was buying it for. I didn't see any age suggestions on the book when I ordered it. There should have been.

I bought this one feeling nostalgic about the British version that i had read as a child - with beautiful illustrations and photos which made it so appealing when I read it as a kid.

I wanted to get my kid excited with a similar book of knowledge. This one has been disappointing. I am thinking of returning it.
