5.0 out of 5 stars True Comeback to Maynard's Big Band roots, October 3, 2010
This review is from: Big Bop Nouveau (Audio CD)
Actually and still is one of the best big band albums that Maynard Ferguson ever dropped out in the late 1980s. Can you imagine this long out-of-print album should stand as a true all-time favorite to many Maynard fans alike? It's shame this CD never got a re-issue and hope to God that it soon get one plus paid digital download. It's one of my favorite Maynard albums ever.

I still can't get enough of Blue Birdland or But Beautiful which is totally popular in Maynard's chartbook. Whether you hear a sound of a true Gabriel or a true pionner, Maynard is it! He can play the notes in sweet style like what a basketball player shoots hoops or else a martial arts specialist visualize his/her technique somewhat like Bruce Lee.

If you go back to his earlier work from the Roulette, Columbia, etc. days, you feel this man has put so much work doing a number of charts that stands out on his own today. For example, look at Frame of the Blues, Ole, Morgan's Organ, MacArthur Park, Got the Spirit, Just Friends, etc. whom got help for Maynard by the likes of Don Menza, Mike Abene, Slide Hampton, Don Sebesky, Keith Mansfield, Pete Jackson, Jay Chattaway, Mike Lane, etc. They help build the doors for penning charts for Maynard Ferguson over the years.

Think back on the earlier charts and till now of Blue Birdland that Maynard has done? And look at Frame of the Blues, MacArthur Park. Listening to this entire album will give you a great discovery of what is about for him to return back to his big band roots and how he created the birth of Big Bop Nouveau, one of the last bands he help formed up till his passing in 2006. So far very neat work on Cherokee, The Hit Medley, among other songs. I greatly miss the Boss of Maynard to death man and forever his legacy will reach mountains higher.

Maynard was and still is the one and only trumpet player that build a lot of doors of many musicians plus trumpet players for many generations. Me included.
