5.0 out of 5 stars Sam Spayed with a little Phillip Marlowe tossed in.....
Sam the cat detective usually works for a pound of lox, but he's in for more than that amount of trouble when he takes a case trying to find Sandy, the cat actor, who's suddenly gone missing. Sandy is the famous 'blonde' cat who's filmed fifty million Catslop commercials. While this book is written for a Young Adult audience, folks of all ages will enjoy the sense of...

2.0 out of 5 stars for Younger readers
I did not notice in any of the reviews that I read on this series of books prior to ordering them that it is written for children! I was shocked to see how "thin" the book was, and it's printed on larger prints. It is light hearted reading, it's O.K. but for such a "smaller" book it sure was not worth the money if one consider the other cat books, such as the "Joe Grey"...

5.0 out of 5 stars A witty and wild cat caper!, September 18, 2000

I don't know who enjoyed this book more -- my kids (who were being read to) or me (I was doing the reading). The story is easy enough for the kids to follow, but interesting enough for any adult. But what makes the book really soar is the hard-boiled, knowing prose, which reminds you of all those great old gumshoe stories and detective movies (think "The Big Sleep, "The Thin Man", etc.) Although this book is, I guess, the second adventure for Sam the Cat, I am now hot on the trail of the first!

5.0 out of 5 stars Our whole family loved it!, September 24, 2000

Here's a childrens book that kids of all ages--meaning parents and grandparents!--can enjoy. My grandson read it in school and was so enthusiastic that my daughter bought a copy and brought it to us on a visit. We had a great time reading it to each other, us grown-ups getting a big kick out of the take-off on Raymond Chandler tough-guy detective stories, and the children just hanging on to every word. I heartily recommend it.

It is light hearted reading, it's O.K. but for such a "smaller" book it sure was not worth the money if one consider the other cat books, such as the "Joe Grey" series and the "the cat who" series, both of which I love, are much thicker, are sold for at least two dollars less! These "thicker" books have more story and blots. I will recommand this series to children but not for adult readers who are like me, used to reading books such as the Joe Grey series.

There are 3 books in the Sam the Cat mysteries, and each one is a must-read winner. Clean story excellent for children, equally eye-popping for adults. Superb writing and witty dialogue modeled on famous characters for the big screen. These books will stay in my permanent library.

Fans of Sam Spade will love this one. I read it with my 5 year-old daughter, and she loved the wordplay as much as I loved the memories. We read it together, with me as Sam, and her as all the other characters. I've always wanted to be just like Sue.
