Book Description

2 and up
There's nothing more intriguing than a construction site. It's a mesmerizing combination of color and sound, action and excitement: from a wrecking ball smashing into old foundations, bulldozers clearing away the rubble, blocks of concrete achingly being lifted to waiting masons, to steel girders delicately being fitted into place. Paul Stickland has composed all these elements into a celebration of building. Seven high-activity spreads- each with generously sized, child-resistant self-activating pops and a brash, chant-aloud text -follow the process of construction, and culminate in a magnificent foldout scene of the finished project and cheering workers. More spectacular even than his phenomenally successful Dinosaur Stomp and Truck Jam, Big Dig is truly a job well done.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

PreS.-K. This big, bold pop-up book offers a close-up view of construction trucks going about their work of clearing a site and preparing it for a new building. The wrecker, bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, loader, telescopic loader, and crane are featured, but other trucks appear in cameo roles. Women as well as men are depicted as drivers and other construction workers. On the last page, a building begins to rise on the construction site, layer upon layer, surrounded by workers and their trucks. The simple rhyming text identifies the vehicles and sometimes guides children into making truck sounds: "G-g-grrrrrrmm. / G-g-grrrrrrmm. / Heavy blocks / can strain the motor. / Of a TELESCOPIC LOADER." The colorful pictures emerge and move in a satisfying way, climaxing with the large, complex double pop-ups on the last spread. The fragility of the pop-up format may give the book a limited shelf life in library collections, but given the considerable pleasure this particular book offers, it may be worth a try. Highly recommended for storytelling collections, this will be a story time showstopper. Carolyn Phelan

More About the Author

Paul Stickland is the author, illustrator and pop up engineer of many, many children's books, including Dinosaur Roar!, The Christmas Bear, Santa's Workshop, Big Dig, One Bear One Dog, Truck Jam, A Number of Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs Galore, Monkey Business, Ten Terrible Dinosaurs, Bears! and many, many more...

I am based in the ancient town of Sherborne, Dorset, in England.
I have six children, Rowan, Felix, Gus, Kit, Arthur and Tabitha.
For the past few years, despite a rigorous publishing schedule, I have spent as much time as I can out on the road, giving inspirational talks and fun drawing and pop-up workshops to children (and their parents!) in schools, libraries and literary festivals, from Edinburgh, Cheltenham and Glastonbury.
I have worked in the UK, Italy and America, in a great diversity of settings, the more challenging the better!
The visits start with the simplest of readings, through explanations of the process of creating and producing a children's book, to drawing workshops and hands on pop-up workshops. I am happy to work with all sizes of groups. I have found working with children with special needs to be particularly rewarding.
I am a passionate advocate for the world of children's books and as the years pass, I have become more and more drawn to working with and empowering young children to expand their creativity through this magical world.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pop-up broke on first try, May 14, 2003
By
dedkad "dedkad" (San Luis Obispo, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Big Dig: A Pop-Up Construction Ragged Bears (Hardcover)
My infant son is fascinated by pop-up books and I've always loved them since I was a child. I am a civil engineer, and I was really looking forward to using this book to introduce my son to the construction industry. The book was pretty [$$$], but I figured it would be worth it. Wrong! The pop-ups are very elaborate and when we got to the last page where the city is supposed to pop up, the buildings tore off the page. I tried to tape them back in, but no luck. I guess this book will have some use - it can teach my son about poor engineering design.

What a wonderful pop-up book for construction-loving kids! The pop-ups are big and elaborate. I just wish they would publish this book again, as I think it would be a big seller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Pop-up for a 2 year-old, September 11, 2005
This review is from: Big Dig: A Pop-Up Construction Ragged Bears (Hardcover)
My 2 year old son loves this book. He has learned all of the different names of construction equipment from it.

The pop-ups are quite elaborate and very well done. Our son does need close supervision when turning the pages, so this book wouldn't be suitable for a very young baby. The previous reviewer would have enjoyed the book more if she/he had introduced the book later.
