Our first Let's Read and Find Out book - but we will be buying more, May 7, 2009
This review is from: The Big Dipper (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1) (Paperback)
My 6 year old daughter and I read this book last night, and she was delighted with it. She immediately wanted to go outside and find the big dipper, but of course it was cloudy last night. The descriptions of the stars was simplistic for young children, but the book really didn't talk down to them. It actually named every star in the Big Dipper. I didn't know their names, and I doubt many people do. It also slightly touches on Ursa Major, the Little Dipper, & the North Star. One of the cool things in the book is that it shows the position of the Big Dipper in the sky for each season. Once again I learned something because it really didn't occur to me that it would be upside down in one season and right side up on another (I'm really not an astronomy person). I would recommend this little book to anyone wanting to foster a love of science in their small children.

Amazing !!, February 13, 2008
This review is from: The Big Dipper (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1) (Paperback)
My 3 1/2 year old has so many questions about everything - and its hard to find good books on some of the topics. They are either oversimplified or too complex. This book is amazing ! It provides a thorough explanation of the topic, while its simple enough for a child to understand. It's just a well thought out book. I just found a ton of other books by this author on a variety of topics - which we'll be getting for birthdays and holidays in the near future.

What They Said!, July 19, 2010
This review is from: The Big Dipper (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1) (Paperback)
As a fan of the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Series, I echo the sentiments of the previous reviewers exactly! Not over-reaching in it's instruction for littles (our own is 5), neither is the information dumbed down.
Yes, it names all the stars in the Big Dipper. (Good luck pronouncing some!) ;-)
Yes, it shows the different positions in the night sky based on season.
Yes, it talks about the Little Dipper too, and their being part of bigger constellations, (Ursas Major and Minor).
Yes, it explains how to find the Big Dipper.
Yes, it explains how to use the Big Dipper to find the North Star.
It also goes a little bit into the importance of the North Star for sea-farers.
And... yes. Mom and Dad learned a couple of new things, too ;-)
This LR&FO Science book does NOT disappoint.
