Great book for beginners!,

This review is from: Big 'n Easy: Supersized Quilts for Queen Beds (Paperback)
I bought this book because I wanted an easy quilt project to learn on. This was the perfect book! The instructions are clear and easy to understand, and they even give suggestions for accessories to use the leftover pieces of fabric you'll have. I made the Quartered Log Cabin quilt, using the same colors as in the book, and it turned out perfect! I made my quilt even larger by adding a border to it. I can't wait to start my next project from this book!

I bought this book based on the title, with the expectation that the patterns offered would be truly easy, using patterns based on the larger pallete of the queen sized bed. Upon receiving the book, I was disappointed to see that the quilt patterns presented were just larger quilts using the same types of piecing methods one would use for smaller quilts. (This fact was mentioned in a sentence in the middle of a paragraph on the back of the book-my error for leaning too heavily on the title). When my quilting novice friend saw the book title on my shelf, she eagerly opened it thinking that she could get some ideas for making larger bed sized quilts without needing a lot of piecework expertise. After looking at the book, she remarked that some of the patterns were not very easy and questioned the title. I agree. Of course the bars pattern and the patterns using large blocks were easy, but some of the quilts, such a Burgoyne Surrounded, Double Nine Patch, and String Cross might have some shortcuts by using strip piecing methods, but there is still a lot of work involved. And strip piecing methods are not anything new. Basically the main offering of this book seems to be pattern measurements suitible for bigger beds, saving time for those who do not like to do the math needed to increase smaller quilt patterns. I would not purchase this book with the expectation of getting different (or easy) ideas for making larger quilts. The end of the book does have good information regarding the backings of larger quilts, and a chapter on pillowcases and shams. With a different title, I would have been satisfied with this book. But New and Easy quilts they are not.
