5.0 out of 5 stars Good Motivation for those who are having trouble getting started..., July 1, 2005

This review is from: My Big Fat Greek Diet: How a 467 Pound Physician Hit His Ideal Weight and You Can Too (Audio CD)
I found Dr Nick's story to be a source of great motivation. He chronicles what it was like to be a 467 pound hard working and productive Doctor, the paradox he faced between his profession and his patients, the challenges and health risks of living an obese life and the constant frustration of trying to do something about it. But Dr Nick was able to create a plan for himself that has helped to fuel my own efforts with weight loss and fitness. I needed a boost in my recovery and started looking for good material to keep me going. I stumbled up this book and was so jazzed to find such a success story that I could relate to. Dr Nick is very candid about his situation and the way he opens up his journey will help raise the success for others who struggle to overcome obesity and motivates on the how and why to make a change in your own life. It is not easy to come to terms with morbid obesity and that fear can keep you from your own recovery. Witnessing Dr Nick go through this process and kick start his program will take the sting out of it and get you thinking, planning and working your own program. I get very charged up when I listen to this audio book and have enjoyed listening to it several times. I plan to purchase the printed book as well to help me continue to fine tune my own program and build on the excitement of experiencing this success story. It will make you want to get busy! ;-) I have heard that 10% of obese people who lose their weight will keep it off for more than a year. This book will help raise that number. I was also very please to see that Dr Nick has an equally motivating website [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! Someone who understands!, March 9, 2006

I listened to the audio version twice and parts of it a third time! It is so refreshing, after having every "let's get skinny" book out there, to read (or hear) someone that talks honestly about what it was to be fat and how they conquered it! Realistic thoughts and solutions. Thanks Dr. Nick!

I found this book (audio CD) to be funny when it needed to be; serious when it needed to be; and full of challenging ideas about weight loss.

Dr. Nick knows his stuff and shares ideas that will work for almost anyone. He knows because he did it himself.

I highly recommend this item to anyone considering a weight loss plan.

I heard about this doctor in Reader's Digest, and then decided to investigate his book and audio book. i decided to download the audio book and get started right away. It's a fantastic story and the information presented is thoughtful and so relevant to the obese or morbidly obese person who has difficulty figuring out how to lose weight and exercise in order to achieve big results. My main disappointment in this project was with the reader-- his vocabulary and education were obviously nowhere near Dr. Nick's-- and so it was distracting and disappointing to hear him bumble through --over and over!-- pronunciation of this very well-written book. With a book written this well, and with its use of interesting words and phrases, it's just mind-blowing that the staff wouldn't stop him , teach him how to say a word, and then start again. Bummer! I am voting here and now for Dr. Nick to voiceover this audio book himself, because I think that would add to its heartwarming message. Nick, if you are reading this, you have achieved a miracle and I wish I could give you a big hug of thanks for not only losing your excess weight, but also for taking the time to write this book with so much heart, accurate information, and first-hand insight. You're a poet, doctor, and wonderful writer. I've been so moved!

I have spent a lifetime of weight struggles - for 50 years. Yoyo losing and gaining has been my life. I heard "Dr. Nick" speak - in person - and bought the book and tapes for me, family and friends right then. Dr. Nick is a wonderfully understanding, kind, compassionate and spiritual person - but he also cuts thru the crap and challenges your rationalizations and denial - and presents the reality of weight loss - it is literally life and living it the way you want. And weight loss - and the longevity and activity you achieve from that is THE most loving gift you can give your family and friends. At a time when I have been wavering about a plateau, after losing 48 lbs, he got me jazzed about losing more. I have only begun the book, but it is incredible - it is him. He says that those of us who live daily with weight "are living a life of deprivation by living a life of excess". That stopped me in my tracks. Of all the books I have read and people I have listened to, this is THE ONE to get. And if you get a chance to hear him talk in person - dont pass it up! He and his story are amazing!
