One Big Fine Debut,
By "underacheiver2000" (Staten Island, NY United States) - See all my reviews

This is a really incredilble album from a band that was never given a chance. The only reason I ever heard of Darla Hood was because they were included in a Warner Bro's compilation right before the release of Big Fine Thing. The 1st single I heard was 99% Bulletproof, it was how I feeling at the time (shortlived but good just the same)and I was hooked. I could not find the album for 3 months after it's release (I live in NYC) so thats just beyond bad distribution. Every song on this CD is strong, though a few stand out as truley exceptional, "I Got Pictures" has some of the funniest lyrics on the album as well as being the only rock and roll song I know of to chronicle mafia turncoat Sammy "the bull" Gravano. "New York City" captures the isolation of a city boy trapped in upstate New York without a damn thing to do (except write music and little else). "99% Bulletproof is just an awsome rocker that can peel the paint off a 68 Camaro. Buy this album and share it with your friends, Darla Hood deserve the recognition (even if they are no longer a band).

A talented band that needs to be heard,

Just great rock n roll, not commercial [stuff]. Well crafted songs with a heavy riff. This isnt music that is made to excatly fit into a certain mold, not music that is made to just make money. I have been trying to get people to listen to this band for years and once they do they dig it. I like a variety of music. These guys know how to write music and play it. Please all we need to support talent like this, not the [stuff] played on radio today. the Prisoner

Not enough recognition but worthy of it,

I am afraid Darlahood falls under the category of one of those bands that make good music but their record company fails to promote them and help them be successful. This is a very good cd with well crafted songs and a delightful little song called "RSVP." It is more or less a guitar rockin' song with some lyrics thrown in. That is kind of unheard of with the type of music they play(alternative guitar rock, let's call it). If you want a comparison, they remind me of Brother Cane, Goo Goo Dolls, and some Collective Soul thrown in for good measure. This cd came out in 1996 and do not think they are a band anymore. That is a shame, record companies do not know what to keep or throw out the window. This

Solid rock.,
This review is from: Big Fine Thing (Audio CD)
This is a band from upstate New York that features good old-fashioned rock guitar with a rythym section that compliments it perfectly. Mostly high-energy, they can also slow it down a notch ("Not Again") and stretch it out ("RSVP")without becoming boring. Their sound is fresh, the songwriting above-average, and the musicianship top-notch. A very good find.

I saw these guys in concert a couple of years ago in Peoria, IL. They put on an awesome show, and I just had to get the CD. Definitely pick this one up if you don't have it already. Their style of rock is alternative enough, but at the same time just some good old-fashioned style rock guitar.

Worth A Look,

This is a fantastic CD froma band with a great sound. Darlahood still has that small club setfeel and sound, with an edge when needed and a little wink when having fun. One of those albums that you can just put in the player and hit shuffle. Something that a lot of your friends won't have but will want to borrow as soon as they hear it...be the first on your block to get one!

Darla Hood -Big Fine thing,

Many years ago (before I was of age,LOL I'm now 27) I used to frequent a bar a friend of mine owned in Upstate NY (Wappingers Falls to be exact) I remember when I first heard Darla Hood. Now I grew up around music and dated many musicians, so live bands that impressed me were very far and few. I was estactic about this band and when I heard they went national I bought their CD right away. Well after many LONG years it some how wound up in my Sister's storage unit in LI, NY. My sister and I now live in San Fran bay area, but she had to get some things from that unit and brought this home to me in Cali. I forgot how amazing they were and still are. I completely suggest buying this CD. It's too bad they didn't the PR and publicity they needed to go further. But they are definitly worth taking a listen to, let me suggest also a band named Waking from Jersey. Have a good one! -Melissa

I purchased this CD at a concert where they opened for another group. I've recently pulled this CD out again and listened to it, and am pleasantly surprised by the quality of the music on this album. The songs are all different enough to make the whole CD worth listening to, unlike some artists whose songs all sound the same.
