Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

CEO Thomas Derale is the hero of Strelecky's inspirational, fictional tale (after The Why Café) of a terminally ill beloved leader and the business, life and leadership advice he dispenses to his dedicated disciple, Joe, who narrates. The bulk of the story consists of Joe's conversations with Thomas in his final weeks, flashbacks to dialogue over the course of their friendship, even television interviews the famous CEO gives in his last days, during which he imparts his words of wisdom. Thomas's thousands of employees are called travelers, progressing on a journey together, and his utopian advice includes the mandate to identify both a personal and corporate Purpose for Existing (PFE)—which should always be aligned to promote productivity and fulfillment. The big five of the book's title are the five things that we want to do, see, or experience in our life before we die, which Derale Enterprises' employees have printed on the back of their business cards. Though the potential corniness of acronyms such as PFE is offset by Thomas's benevolence, readers with a preference for stories of imperfect CEOs running real companies might find Thomas's advice more suited to the realm of life coaching than running a business.

Within a year after it's release, word of mouth support from readers had spread the book across the globe--inspiring people on every continent, including Antarctica. It went on to become a #1 Best Seller, and translated into twenty-one languages. John has gone on to write other books, including Life Safari and The Big Five for Life. He coauthored the book How to be Rich and Happy.

Through his writings and appearances on television and radio, John's messages have inspired millions of people to live life on their terms. All of this continues to humble and amaze him.

Since 2004, he has been actively involved with helping individuals discover and fulfill their PFE (Purpose for Existing) and Big Five for Life. He also trains coaches around the world to do the same for their clients using the techniques he has created.

When he isn't writing or speaking, John spends extensive time fulfilling another part of his Big Five for Life--traveling the world. In addition to his time in Africa, he has taken additional extended trips to the Amazon Basin, Yucatan Peninsula, South America, SE Asia, Europe and China.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tale that encapsulates the most important leadership concepts., January 17, 2008
This review is from: The Big Five for Life: Leadership's Greatest Secret (Hardcover)
There are a ton of books on leadership, but not since the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari (Robin Sharma) have I read a book that brings all the best leadership concepts together in one engaging tale. With each passing page I wished that I knew the leader described in this book. If even half of our political and corporate leaders operated in the manner so eloquently described in this book, the world would be an extraordinary place. After reading this book, I realized how important it is for each and every person to step up their leadership ability... starting with me!

5.0 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for any business owner!, December 28, 2008
This review is from: The Big Five for Life: Leadership's Greatest Secret (Hardcover)
John gets to the core of things in a manner that everyone can relate to. An excellent read that is worth your time and a great follow-up to his "Why Are You Here Café".

The leadership concepts that John presents through the story are basic (but essential) messages that not only benefits those who seek additional guidance for their businesses, but also benefits those same individuals in their personal life as well.

I highly recommend for anyone who is about to start a business as well as those who already have.
