2.0 out of 5 stars Should be hardcover at this price...
Definitely overpriced at nearing four bucks... seems like something you would find for a buck in the dollar rack at Target.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best, June 29, 2000
This review is from: Big Frank's Fire Truck (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
I am an art teacher and the father of a four year old little boy who has fallen in love with this book. Not just because it is about big fire trucks, but because it is a wonderfully illustrated synopsis of an admirable man doing his job well along with a team of firefighters that represent other cultures and genders without making it seem forced (unlike public education). This is one of the finest children's books we have purchased and it is because of the wonderful detail of the illustrations and how they compliment the writing. This book could stand on it's own without the writing (Good Dog Carl) just because of the illustrations, but it is wonderful to see art and text compliment each other so well n children's books. Buy this book now if your boy (or girl) loves trucks, pictures, and a story that weaves the two together in a magical way. You'll see!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, exciting, educatinal read, July 16, 2001

I agree with the other reviews. My 2 year old will be getting many years enjoyment out of this book. I especially like it because it keeps his rapt interest for much longer than most 'pre-school' aged books, but is simple enough for a toddler. But my absolute favorite part, is the fact that Our Hero, Fireman Frank, has lunch and a nap as part of the book. With an active toddler, you need all the reinforcement you can get for those sticky areas!! :-) Great role model!

5.0 out of 5 stars favorite of fireman books, February 21, 2003
This review is from: Big Frank's Fire Truck (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
This book is great for reading to Toddlers, and self reading elementary school students up to at least 9 years old. Longer than you think it would be, it gives you an example of the daily routine of a fireman. Lots of fun and educational too. The fireman is full of personality due to great writing and wonderful detailed illustrations!

My five year old son loves firefighting books. I am a volunteer firefighter/EMT in NY so my son always has a lot of questions. This book is fine without explanations. My son always has to know, "Is that how you do it Daddy?"

This book stays close to reality with the help of Big Frank! Big Frank is a very likeable character for my son. I first started to read this book to him at 4 and he has loved it since.

What is impressive about this book is it's appeal to any age. The book follows a firefighter during his typical 24-hour shift. All information is based on realistic circumstances - from responding to a car accident, to inspecting stores/restaurants, to teaching children fire safety, to the infamous fighting of brush fires.
Artwork is detailed but easy (and fascinating) for a two-year old to view. Lots of little details are imbedded in the pictures for older children to find and learn about firefighting.
The book is slightly wordy for a two-year old, but perfect for ages 4 and up. We summarize each page for our 2-year old son.
I am excited that this book will continue to be one of his favorites as he grows.
A must for children who love Firemen/Fire Trucks!

Big Frank's Fire Truck is my son's favorite book. He considers Big Frank his buddy. We have worn our first copy out, so we are ordering a few more copies. Wonderfully illustrated and detailed. We have and will spend many hours with Big Frank, Gary, Mike and Janet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Fireman Book For The Little Ones, October 8, 2010

This review is from: Big Frank's Fire Truck (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
I bought this book for my 2 year old nephew who has become fascinated with firetrucks after watching the Mighty Machines DVD involving them. I wanted to get a book that would engage his interest but one that wouldn't show burning buildings because I don't want him trying to comprehend at this age that homes can burn down. This book fits the bill. The firemen fight a brush fire and a car fire. The car fire isn't the kind we usually see, i.e. a car pulled over at the side of the road that is all aflame for some mysterious reason, but is instead a car that has been in an accident (a roll against a light/phone pole). He's already seen accidents on the highways so he knows what they are. The drawing shows Big Frank comforting the driver who was injured but who is obvious ambulatory - just a big boo-boo to a child.

The illustrations are well done and detailed - there's a lot of side activity going on that the child's attention can be directed to and discussed. The story itself is aimed at a slightly older child, making the story interesting rather than too simplistic. It's very easy to paraphrase for a child my nephew's age.

By the way he was clutching it and looking at the pictures, I can tell that this book is going to be one of his favorites for quite a while. I would recommend it.

My 4 year old grandson has inherited his dad's love of fire engines. He went ga-ga over the Fireman Sam DVD's, so thought I'd get him this and 2 other fire truck books. My son said they read all three almost every night...real faves!

I bought this book for my grandson last year because he loves anything to do with being a fireman. His uncle is a fireman and his dad is a reserve fireman so he spends alot of time at the fire station. If this book wasn't authentic from the daily routine at the station, to the types of fire trucks, he wouldn't have it memorized. Even though he knows it word for word, after having it read to him a hundred times, it is still one of his favorites.
It is just long enough that a 2 year old will sit still to listen to the entire story. The illustrations are very realistic and make it acceptable for older children as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for firemen obsessed kids, January 6, 2012
This review is from: Big Frank's Fire Truck (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
My son loves this book! Personally I find it over-detailed and not much of a story, but that's not the point - it's not for me! If your child is into firefighters this will be a big hit. Just get ready to read it over, and over, and over again.
