5.0 out of 5 stars Make Room for Big Frog, October 6, 2009
This review is from: Big Frog Can't Fit In: A pop-up book (Board book)
I'm a pretty big fan of Mo Willems and pop-up books, so to have a Mo Willems pop-up book is like a hot fudge sundae with a cherry on top.

Big Frog just doesn't fit in. Maybe shorter legs or a more bendable spine would help her feel more at home with all the other frogs. But Big Frog soon learns that the best of friends don't expect you to fit into their lives--they make room in their lives for you.

One of the best things about this book is that it is written as a pop-up book. They didn't just take a story and make it interactive to interest kids. Instead the plot itself necessitates a pop-up medium. Big Frog might not fit in this book, but every Mo Willems fan needs to make room in their library for this larger-than-life book.

As a note to parents who are reluctant to buy their children pop-up books, the medium has much improved since the days when we were kids. I've had several kids of varying ages (including a three year-old who wouldn't let anyone help her with the pull tabs) look at it, play with it and try to pull it apart. The pages started out a little stiff, but everything now works smoothly and has held up incredibly well. This book is made to last.

They weren't kidding when they said this is a pop out book and not a pop up book. This sucker's big, and when you open the pages different elements spring out in all directions. Very cool.

It's funny and well illustrated and the physical construction of the book seems about as solid as you can reasonably expect. I think my copy is still going to get destroyed at some point (just being realistic) but we should get good value before then.

As the cover notes: Warning, contains one pigeon...

5.0 out of 5 stars There's always room for a frog, October 25, 2009
This review is from: Big Frog Can't Fit In: A pop-up book (Board book)
This is a very clever, interactive pop up or out book (depending on how you look at it! The 16 page book contains pop ups on each page as Big Frog tries to fit in the book. My granddaughters liked the book and found the premise fascinating that a book was written where the main character didn't fit. That said though, the kids are two and four, the pop ups are too fragile to allow them unlimited, unsupervised access to this beautiful book.
