Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

At over 800 pages, it's big. Very big. But Netscape Communicator itself is big, and it takes a big book to effectively describe it all. This guide balances comprehensiveness with clear, simple explanations and step-by-step instructions. After an introduction to Communicator and instructions for installation, the book moves on to sections about each of the components of Communicator: Navigator (browser), Messenger (e-mail), Collabra (newgroups), Conference (real-time multi-user exchanges), Composer (Web editor), and Netcaster ("push" media). There is also a section on the professional edition of Communicator and its features. The book goes on to discussions of multimedia, plug-ins, Java, helper applications and user profiles. There's a short but cogent section on security, and a sneak peek at the next generation of Web tools that Netscape is working on. The chapters on Conference and Netcaster are particularly excellent, too. Approximately 150 pages are set asides as a yellow pages of recommended Web sites from Infoseek. A good glossary and excellent index (much needed in a book this size) rounds out an impressive work about Communicator.

From Library Journal

This is another "bible," covering everything from the various tools in Communicator, to security and encryption, to getting started with Java and JavaScript. As a bonus, there are almost 200 pages of Internet yellow pages compliments of InfoSeek. While the book is not for beginners, intermediate and high-end users will enjoy the browsability of this book, which wanders all over the place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of all components of Communicator,, November 10, 1998

This review is from: The Big Guide to Netscape Communicator 4 (Paperback)
I am an instructor of a course entitled Introduction to the Internet for Instructional Support. I used this book as the course text. It is an outstanding book with excellent coverage of all the of components of Netscape Communicator; Navigator, Messenger, Collabra, Conference, Composer and Netcaster. It is wonderfully easy to use with step-by-step instructions with accompanying graphics. There are some examples and exercises to use but that is not the purpose of the book. The purpose of the book is to completely and easily explain the components of Netscape in an easy to read and use fashion. It has a good index and a companion guide to Web Hot Sites. My students are primarily secretaries of academic departments and they use the book to teach faculty and other staff how to use Communicator. This book may actually change the way our academic community communicates with each other. But there needs to be an update of this book to reflect the changes from Netscape Communicator 4.07 to v. 4.5.

4.0 out of 5 stars good intro book, December 22, 1999

This review is from: The Big Guide to Netscape Communicator 4 (Paperback)
Since I use Netscape I thought I needed to learn a little bit about it. The book accomplished that.

Since the book is dated I cannot give it five stars.

It explained to me about the features of Netscape Communicator, but not to technical. Which is what I wanted. A nice, easy read book.

I have not looked at the yellow pages, afterall what are search engines for.

I also was able to create my webpage in 15 minutes from what the book explained to do. All you have to do is hit the publish button.
