Extremely lightweight - but it works!,

I bought this tapering jig prior to tapering my first table leg. It was inexpensive, I was inexperienced, 'nuff said. The surprise came with its performance. Although I am confident that I could bend this thing in half if I was in the right mind, it does a really good job of guiding my workpiece through the saw. The adjustment feature is simple and easy to use, but the "graduated scale" is a bit hard to use accurately. To set it up, I simply adjust it by eye and then measure from the blade to the trailing edge of the guide. This trial and error usually takes no more than a minute or two, and the jig stays locked on my final setting for as many cuts as I need to make. Although there are nicer, more expensive versions out there, you cannot beat the value for the money with this tool.

I found this jig to be [poor quality], flimsy and inaccurate. It is hard to set up and flexes easily making accurate tapers impossible. Take my advise and spend a little more money for a good one or build one yourself. I threw it away.

Yes, anyone who might need this device could build it! I build one out scrap 2x4 a few years back for a specific project. This one is more compact, easier to use, much lighter, and in a well thought-out configuration. I, far-and-away, prefer to use jigs to make things then to build jigs.

Another gift gone bad....,

For birthdays and other holidays my Sweetheart, kids and grandkids usually buy me woodworking tools. Even though I usually provide them with a list, occasionally things go bad.
This jig is one of them. One of the legs was bent out of the box, took some creative straitening methods to get it to work at all. Finally got it assembled and working, sort of. This thing is too flimsy to be of any serious use. Doesn't have enough mass to use it on large leg sections. I'm afraid the push tab will bend. Adjusting it by eye is not a big deal, but the flimsy lock mechnism does not instill confidence in a repeatable cut. The whole thing flex's when you push the piece thru the saw. After wasting a couple hours and a few pieces of scrap wood, I decided this jig should go back. Unfortutely it was purchased at HD, who wouldn't take it back, since it had been assembled and used. So on my way out the store, I tossed it in their dumpster. I'm going to make my own out of some hardwood and brass fittings. I know I can make something a lot more useful than this. Can't recommend this jig, except as a model of what not to do.

Just like dancing a jig.,

Well, it works very well. I am relatively new to woodworking, and have found that when building something that requires multiple tapers, you really can't go wrong with this jig.I recently built two chairs and a settee/glider using Redwood, which is very expensive wood in my area, and didn't want to take any chances when cutting out 12 tapered legs...wanted to be sure that they were all indentical. This is certainly the trick for that. Even if you would be off 1/16th inch or so, all of the cuts will be the same. A minor mistake is moot because all legs turn out the same. Very good product, easy to use, light weight and durable. You should have one of these when cutting multiple tapers.

It was missing two machine screws,

This works well and was easy to assemble but it was missing two machine screws that hold the curved guide. Luckily I had the parts left over from old project but nothing irritates me more than to get something, take it out of the box, start to put it together and find parts missing.

Very Poor Design/Quality,

I have owned this jig for a while and wish I had spent the money on making my own jig from the get-go. It is very inaccurate and hard to adjust. Make your own.

Better to make your own,

I purchased this thinking I would save the time of making one myself. Wrong. When you tighten the angle adjustemt screws, the jig no longer sits flat on the table saw surface. An inaccurate jig is worse than no jig at all. I tried slightly bending the adjusting arm to make the legs sit flat - no luck. A taper jig can be made with very little time and money - don't bother with this one.

Solid construction, but useless unless you have a large table, or small workpiece,

I didn't give this item a bad review, because it is well made, and seems very rugged. Unfortunately once I had the item in hand I realized that the way it is designed to work you cannot use it on a small homeowners saw, or to cut very long pieces. Just keep this in mind. Mine is useless to me, with a bench top saw I could only cut a 12" piece using this tool.

Useful jig.,
This review is from: Big Horn 19066 Taper Jig (Tools & Home Improvement)
The darn thing does what is should do for a very good price. Sure you could make one, but I find little joy in making jigs. I would rather spend my time building more fun items. This jig will let you do just that.
