Big Java 4th Edition,

This review is from: Big Java: Compatible with Java 5, 6 and 7 (Paperback)
I like the book. However, did not realize that it was a student book. There is an option to get access to the teacher section of the website in the book ONLY IF you are a teacher at an authorized site. Otherwise forget it.
Not so bad really being that in the real world you won't have the answers any way. Having paid as much money as I did for this book it would have been nice to see the answers and to have access to the teacher pages. As I bought this book to be self taught not as a student. Good illustrations. I think it will be a good book regardless of the lack of being able to access the teacher's side of the website the book mentions.

Having never programmed before, I found this book (in combination with "Invitation to Computer Science") a really good way to learn from the basics. I also had a really good professor who may have contributed to my ability to pick up the concepts and language but overall, I did A LOT of reading from this book and worked really hard on the examples and feel I have learned a lot although I do not think that with this book alone I would be able to teach myself Java.

Big book, little directions.,

First few chapters just assume you know how to set up a script and make it dance. Pretty good as a supplemental reading. I got myself a hard copy halfway through the course. Don't expect it to teach you how to build an OS tho...

This is a great book for use as a college text, or for a professional programmer who wants to learn Java. Excellent content and examples, with questions and answers for the chapter learning objectives. However, if you're new to programming and want to learn Java on your own, I would suggest Introduction to Java Programming by Daniel Liang. Only downside to either of these books is that they're paperback.

Just started reading this book and so far so good! It shows examples of code and goes in depth to explain how to think like a programmer. Very easy to read and lot's of visual code. You can even get some code snippets of the publishers website for free!

I am not much for a book type of person when learning subjects. I usually hate to learn from the book but this book is very clear with showing you how to use libraries, how data structure works, basically the main concepts, they show you in a relaxed manner, not too uptight/formal with the text either. The book explains how to do something and then after it shows an example of how to use it in a quick sample program. I had to use this book for two Java Classes at my school and I regret not using it the first time I started the Java class. Having use it in the second Java class, I'm getting a B or an A. But then again, I also have a better professor haha. Anyways, I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn quick, easy , straight to the point Java.

This book is geared towards the absolute beginner (like me) but has most things needed for a thorough coverage of Java. Very well written and clear explanations. I found it much more useful than the Gaddis book (personal taste).

The book is expensive. Surely you can learn Java by yourself with out this book, but it has great insight and the examples are great comes with a site to download the source. But still not worth the price.

Had this as a textbook for Java Programming class. Mostly learned the program from Google search. I really don't recommend this book. The problems in the back of the chapter often asked you to make a program that was not possible with what was already learned in the book. The explanations of code was often confusing and not helpful. The examples were often ineffective as well.
