4.0 out of 5 stars Another solid entry from Chuck Logan
Phil Broker is an ex-Saint Paul cop who now lives on Michigan's Upper Peninsuala with his infant daughter. However, when his ex-wife, Caren, finds her present husband is in deep with the Chicago mob she grabs the two million dollar payoff and goes running to Broker for help. 2.0 out of 5 stars Style turned me off
While the action was exciting, I found a lot about this book that I didn't like. First, I simply didn't find Broker to be a compelling protagonist. He just isn't that likable; he's uptight, unemotional (he barely related to his baby and his wife), and detached. Second, the transformation of James from hapless loser to what he becomes seemed a stretch. Third, and most...

On the way, she pairs up with morally-bankrupt reporter Tom James who sees his big chance to grab for the brass ring by murdering Caren, framing her husband, and disappearing with the two million into the FBI Witness Protection Program. But he didn't figure on Phil Broker who would stop at nothing, not even the FBI's Witness Protection Program, to learn the truth behind his ex-wife's death.

I've read Chuck Logan from the beginning and he just gets better and better. His writing is strong and his characters stand out. His writing style is very staccato and immediate but the action is exciting and the plot is clever. This thriller is way better than many of today's genre that masquerade as thrillers. I recommend this book highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chuck Logan does it again!!, July 27, 2001
I can't believe this book sat on my shelf for over a year and I didn't read it. I finished it in one day! Once again, Chuck Logan immerses the reader in the world of his protagonist,in this case, Phil Broker. Hopefully we'll see more of Broker in future books. This is a great read and the "daddy" scenes are winners. The reviewer who says Broker doesn't care about his wife and child didn't read this book very carefully. What about the last sentence????? Maybe one has to understand about "compartments" to understand Phil Broker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walter Mitty - stop dreaming, March 16, 1999

A colorless reporter tries to make his dreams come true. And he almost succeeds. Fabulous plotting, always new angles, never a dull moment. Tightly written. Interesting characters. This is the way mysteries should be written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!! Once read, twice hooked., December 15, 1998

This review is from: The Big Law: A Novel (Hardcover)
C.L. is the better version of almost all of the authors who're trying to get the grip of the genre of mystery and thriller. Fantastic, C.L., you did it again, although this one is not as intensive as 'The Price of Blood,' but it's already good enough for me to give you a HIGH 5, again. Keep it coming, man, but please don't rush it okay?

4.0 out of 5 stars A top notch coast-to-coast airplane book., December 30, 1998
This review is from: The Big Law: A Novel (Hardcover)
This author is fast developing his craft. His books show respect for his current genre and a delight in the language. His first, Hunter's Moon, was good for the flight to the hub. His second, Price of Blood, can carry the reader between most major cities. And the lastest, The Big Law, works for any coast-to-coast flight. Next should be a book suitable for most transcontinental passages. After that---who knows? A talent to be followed and encouraged.

Chuck Logan just keeps getting better and better!. Nice style of writing and adds enough human element to make his characters real. Such as Broker being a daddy to his daughter Kit. A very nice touch to a man's man and makes his character more believable. Tom James'is a slime ball from hell and Mr. Logan's description of him is excellent! All characters are very well described to where you feel you actually know them. Lots of actions and thrills as the story progresses and doesn't let you down.

I highly recommend The Big Law to anyone who likes strong characters and a strong story line from start to finish!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!!, September 4, 2010
I 'listened' to this via unabridged audiobook. It is the best. I'm not one to vigorously object to language or sexual content in a book. This book doesn't have much of either and it is glorious. One of, if not the best, mystery/suspence I've ever read or listened to. Just one of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cleverly plotted and an offbeat thriller, November 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Big Law: A Novel (Hardcover)
Chuck Logan can write!! I have read all three of his thrillers and he is getting better with each outing. His characters have depth and, in this case, the reporter turned killer is one of the more interesting characters I have come across in some time. The idea of a "good guy" trying to get at someone in the federal witness program is a real turnabout. One thing I did get tired of (I guess I feel it has no place in a thriller even though I realize that the hero has to be shown as a "Mr Mom" rounded person)was the child. Reading endlessly about baby poop and pablum all over the place is a turnoff in a thriller. Is it possible that the author is a late life recent father??Just wondering!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stellar Mystery Thriller, October 24, 2011
Double crosses and hidden motives abound as ex cop Phil Broker tries to find out who murdered his ex-wife Caren - killed as she was coming to him for help. Nice sense of place (upstate Minnesota) and good characters - especially Broker and ex partner Keith Anglund.
