This is one of those albums that I wish I could buy over and over again. I own it on record, tape and Cd. Whenever I see this in a used bin it angers me that someone discarded it for a couple bucks, then I buy it and give it as a gift. This album is up there with Raw Power, Young Loud and Snotty, London Calling, and Exile on Main Street. Oh, and if you like this then you should do yourself a favor and buy the Dictators - Go Girl Crazy.

Garage punk meets Weird Al Yankovic. And it could have only happened in Philly.
You got that man? What are you wastin' your cash on? If you don't got Mojo Nixon, your store could use some fixin'.
There isn't a band that achieved that perfect mix of almost-tongue-in-cheek punk like the DM did. And there sn't a band that changed their names more often either.
But this isn't as hard-edged or as goofy as it sounds. Oh, sure...it STARTED as a prank, as a hoax. But then again...the songs are just too good, too musical, too much fun. Ok, maybe at times its goofy, but goofy is good, goofy is fun. Other times its pure satire, and more witty than anything any "serious" band ever did.
You think you're clever? Uh-uh. The Dead Milkmen are clever. You think you're talented or important? Uh-uh. You take yourself WAY too seriously my friends. The Dead Milkmen were making fun of people like you before you were cutting teeth.
They will be copied, they will be ripped-off. But their cult will never be breached. There will always be someone who tries too hard, or takes themselves too seriously, or not seriously enough. And it won't be fun. It won't be fun 'cause it won't be original. And anywhoos...no band will ever be better to listen to at full volume with the top down while drivin' down to the Jersey shore.
I bought a big lizard for only a dollar fifty, well, that's pretty neat, yeah thats...well, you know...nifty.

I bought this in 1985 on vinyl and just bought it again on CD (can you believe it's been 20 years?!), and I'm just amazed at how fresh it sounds, like a funny fun-loving Green Day, but tighter. It could have been put out yesterday. I can't believe how every song is about two minutes or less and brilliant, funny, inspired and perfect... no one else could write lyrics like these. One listen and you'll be singing "Friday night cooking show with a horsemeat dish...I had to stay in the freezer" at the top of your lungs.

there is no way this album could ever be put out these days. definately had to come out in '84. I mean could you see any band doing aids jokes and getting away with it? well, the milkmen did. has anyone ever noticed the references to f.o.d? "my parents said if i eat all my food then i can go to hardcore show and see f.o.d."-nutrtion. there's another reference to them on a live recording of "milkmen stomp". just curious.

Big Lizard In My Backyard was a step forward in Punk Rock. The Dead Milkmen's Lyrics are the funniest things I have ever heard, and the music is beautiful. Songs such as Bitchin' Camaro and Beach Song are about feelings many people can relate to. Songs like Big Lizard, Dean's Dream and Tugena really sound amazing. This CD could change your life.

This is one of the best albums of all time. Let's make a list of its wonderful qualities: -Loud -Obnoxious -Hilarious -Obscene -Shocking -Original -Philadelphian -Punk Rock -Jangly Guitars(used in a way you've never heard) -etc. -Insulting -Improvisational
Buy this. It is one of the funniest albums ever. And also rocks out like nothing else. I recently got to meet my musical idols and to talk to them. They are now in new bands around the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Burn Witch Burn and The Town Managers. Check 'em out. They are also great. And all you record execs out there, sign these new bands--they are very popular wherever they play. There's a magic there. A magic you can't quite put your finger on. Other great DM albums include: Eat Your Paisley, Beezlebub, Bucky Fellini

this album is like the straight A student who gets all the credit, love and praise, while the rest of the brothers and sisters,(bucky fellini, eat yr paisely, metaphysical graffitti) are the red-headed stepchildren. is "big Lizard" a classic? yep. hilarious? you betcha. the only album worth owning? no effin' way. in my opinion, 'big liz' is the gateway drug, the reefer if you will, which leads to much better stuff. 'plumb dumb' and 'deans dream' are two of their best songs, as are 'serrated edge,' 'vfw' 'bitchin' camaro' and the title track. just don't stop here; you'd be missing out on a lot.

This is a true piece of music history. Big Lizard in My Backyard is one of those albums you put away, but you keep bringing back out. This has to be the top Dead Milkmen album. I still enjoy looking at the orginal album cover that my brother Jay left me when he died. Since I don't have, nor can I afford a record player to play this or my other albums my brother left me I will settle for Amazon's $.99 per MP3 or $8.99 for the album. Ha, great memories when punk rock and my bro were still alive. Thank you Dead Milkmen for your musical talents.
