“Big Big Love is a ginormous blessing to people everywhere. Not only is it a superb sex manual, it’s positively radical, fun to read, and life affirming—big time. We know that “people of size” enjoy sex as much as anyone, but to talk about it so frankly, to show it, and give explicit details about the ins and outs of it, is as transgressive as it gets in our culture of “thin is sexy.” This book is well worth its weight in gold.” —Annie Sprinkle, PhD, Ecosex Educator, Sexologist
“Part of enjoying sex is being comfortable with your body. Big Big Love dispels myths related to fat sexuality and helps people learn to take pleasure in their bodies, regardless of size.” —Bruce Sturgell, Founder, Chubstr.com
“Fat people have sex—and thanks to Hanne Blank’s updated and unabashedly unashamed guide to sex and relationships, fat people can have better, more satisfying sex. This book is vitally important for anyone who shops in the plus-size department. Thanks to Hanne, we’re all a little luckier when it comes to getting lucky.” —Marianne Kirby, author, Lessons from the Fatosphere

8 years ago when I began my journey to being fat positive in earnest, I had the privilege of buying the first edition of Big Big Love when it was still in print and I am not merely spouting cliches when I say that it changed my life overnight. For the first time in my life I was reading a joyful "how to" sex manual that was geared towards people with bodies like mine. It was a pleasant surprise to find that Big Big Love was more than just your typical sex manual, it was also an invaluable guide to living your life with joie de vivre as a fat person. Big Big Love included such priceless chapters on how to deal with well meaning loved ones who constantly critique your weight and it even offered clever comebacks to comments that come from less than well meaning sources. Big Big Love along with Marilyn Wann's Fat!So? became my constant bedside companions as I learned to navigate through life as a queer fat woman of color.
I am happy to say that the revised edition far exceeded my wildest expectations. Since the first edition of Big Big Love was published, our society has seemed to step up it's hate mongering tactics towards fat people with such shows as "The Biggest Loser" and a constant barrage of weight loss commercials aimed at letting you know that your body is NOT okay as it is. Hanne Blank once again saves the day in this revised edition and responds to the fat hatred epidemic by stepping up her own Fat and Sex Positivity game. In this edition, her language is stronger in it's reassurance to readers' that yes they are worthy of having healthy sex lives and it's is also stronger in expressing the author's well justified anger towards people who would tell youotherwise.... The new addition of lovingly rendered illustrations that depict fat people of various genders having sex with partners of various genders and sizes along with the chapter geared towards FAs (Fat Admirers) is worth the price of the book alone.
Just like in the previous edition, this book is more than just a fun sex manual, it's also a survival guide on how to take pride in your body no matter what society tells you. This book is pansexual in it's focus and there are sections that address body image issues within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and asexual (yes I said asexual!!) communities which makes a huge difference to queer fat people such as myself. Blank even has a chapter that addresses the issues faced by fat people based on their body type (apple, pear, hourglass) that absolutely opened my eyes to a facet of being fat that I never even thought about. Brava!
I can't recommend this book to fat people and those who love them enough!Read more ›
BBL is a book about fat people and their much bigger problems that arise because of it. It's a myth buster book that flies in the face of all hurtful, harmful ideas about fat people.
Yes, fat people have sex. Yes, fat people are not always fat due to eating. Yes, fat people are both healthy and sick, just like skinny people. And most of all, the problem with being fat are mostly the majority decrying the minority, like a lot of other problems.
Even though some of the material wasn't relevent to me I found the book a great read, containing some helpful information and made me feel more accepting of myself and others who not only are big but are different. I like books like this that have information but also that you get a bit of an insight into the author and it had qoutes from a variety of other people too.
The book was described as a book about sex and relationships for people of size. While it was incredibly useful, I was disappointed that they didn't include more about the sex aspect. It did contain various useful tips, but it was nothing like I thought it would be. I wanted more inspiration on positions and comfort.
I became plus size after taking medication. I've worked through my issues regarding body acceptance so much of the book felt like it was irrelevant. A large part of Big Big Love s devoted to helping the readers become confident with their body and sexuality. This is awesome, as body issues can get in the way of enjoying good sex. I just found that it had little practical information about issues regarding the act itself.
It's a solid book and is brilliant for people who have insecurities about their body when it comes to sex. For the rest of us, though, it's a bit disappointing.
I ended up using the websites listed throughout the book more than the actual book. But I had never heard of most of the websites, so it was nice to learn about them! PS go have some awesome sex!!
This update of the 2000 underground classic brings fat sex into the 21st century with its upbeat, intersectional advice for fat people and their partners. This is "The Joy of Sex" for plus-sized folks!
