4.0 out of 5 stars We love Big Momma 2
Despite what the critcs say. The is a great film and flat-out. The story out with Malcolm investigating who kill his mentor. So he becomes Big Mama once again to follow up on a lead. By posing as a nanny. Give the movie a chance and judge for yourself.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big Momma's House 2
The only surprising thing about "Big Momma's House 2" is that it arrives six years after it's equally abysmal predecessor, in hopes that we have forgotten all about that trainwreck of a movie. Well, we haven't. Sitting in the theater, within a sea of marginally impressed moviegoers, I began to have misgivings about the future of the talented and infinitely funny Martin...

This movie is funny as heck. It's just a silly comedy. If you take it for what it's worth, you'll have a good time. If you're a stiffy, you wont enjoy it and, most likely, people don't enjoy being around you anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Made Me Laugh, July 25, 2006
This review is from: Big Momma's House 2 (DVD)
Which says a lot. Not too many comedies do. But Martin Lawrence surprised me here and there. I actually ended up enjoying this movie, despite the fact that I'm not a big fan of Lawrence at all.

The real star of the show, in my opinion, are the kids. Especially young 3-year-old Andrew (played by twins Preston and Trevor Shores). It's sad when the 3-year-old is the best actor. He stole the show for me.

Reality is completely out the window on this one so don't expect anything that requires an IQ over 60. Just go with the flow, there is worst out there and this movie doesn't try to pass itself off as being a smart movie.

So, rent this and enjoy it. I enjoyed it more than I thougth I would.

This review is from: Big Momma's House 2 (DVD)
Yes it's silly with lots of primary process humor...but it's so funny I laughed out loud through most of the movie. Lighten up folks! If you're looking for deep thoughts, you don't go to see Martin Lawrence. Good clean fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solved all of the problems with the first film, August 26, 2006
By
Farffleblex Plaffington (Parnybarnel, Mississippi) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Big Momma's House 2 (DVD)
Perhaps not surprisingly if you're familiar with many of my reviews, I'm going to have to go against the grain here. I think Big Momma's House 2 is a much better film than the first one. There were a number of problems--most related to trying to pull the material in too many directions at once, both in terms of genre and style--that made Big Momma's House uneven and not able to reach its potential. (See my review of that film for more information.) New director John Whitesell and returning writers Don Rhymer and Darryl Quarles have solved or surmounted all of those problems and produced a relatively unique gem in Big Momma's House 2.

The comedy is still frequently of the absurdist variety here, but it's toned down just enough, and the rest of the main characters were made just quirky enough, that the blend is exquisite. Additionally, the problems with Malcolm Turner (Martin Lawrence) playing Big Momma to people who know Big Momma intimately have been eliminated.

Next, unlike the first film, Rhymer and Quarles didn't add crime elements as an underdeveloped afterthought here. Instead, a crime story remains the focus throughout the film. The crime story is well written and contains just enough character development to give it effective dramatic weight and drive. The Big Momma scenes function instead as a necessary satellite around the more serious story, and the film becomes more like the classic Pink Panther films, where we have an interesting crime story being investigated by a buffoonish law enforcement agent. Rhymer and Quarles are even able to work in something of a rom-com subplot (involving an errant assumption about a lover) in a similar naturally flowing way, but they keep it appropriately on the back burner.

Yet, the highlights of the film occur when Big Momma interacts with everyday people. Wisely, the focus is kept narrower in these scenes, and we get much better character development. The Fuller family is full of amusing, slightly absurdist quirks. There are a couple characters from the crime plot who it would have been nice to interact with more--Agent Kennelly (Zachary Levi), Stewart (Josh Flitter), Agent Morales (Marisol Nichols) and so on--but even they are surprisingly well developed for the amount of screen time they receive.

This is also a somewhat sweeter story given the complex, continually developing relationship between Big Momma and the Fuller family. But that doesn't mean it's not outrageously funny, too. I laughed out loud far more consistently here than I did during Big Momma's House 1, and that's because the film is so much more consistent overall, yet Whitesell manages to retain a lot of parallelism with the first film while avoiding simply remaking the same story with different characters and a different setting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertainingly brainless...., August 19, 2006

I'm a sucker for men in drag movies, and I found Big Momma's house 2 to be actually kind of funny. Perhaps it was the cold medication, or perhaps Martin Lawrence actually manages to pull off something here with the drag humor, but I enjoyed it. I particularly found Martin's job interview to be funny, and the scenes where he interacted with the children he was taking care of were funny.

The screenwriter really lampoons the yuppie lifestyle with overscheduled children and makes it work. Oh, and the little dog was really cute.

Funny in a brainless kind of way. 4 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big Momma's House 2, February 2, 2006
By

The only surprising thing about "Big Momma's House 2" is that it arrives six years after it's equally abysmal predecessor, in hopes that we have forgotten all about that trainwreck of a movie. Well, we haven't. Sitting in the theater, within a sea of marginally impressed moviegoers, I began to have misgivings about the future of the talented and infinitely funny Martin Lawrence. Here is a man with so much potential and with a long history of films ("Blue Streak" remains his best) who continues to be plauged with roles in thankless movies. Yet, it's not Lawrences fault that he is one of the handful of positive things that emerge from the film.

He again plays FBI agent Malcolm Turner, who is now working at a desk job since his wife Sherie (Nia Long) is pregnant. As fate would have it, a computer worm that has the potential to leak top secret government files may fall into the wrong hands, and that is just enough to motivate Turner to go undercover as megaton nanny Big Momma and investigate a potential suspect (Mark Moses), who also happens to have a wife (Emily Procter) and three children whom he hardly ever sees.

The suspect's family is a big distraction for the film. The children--a goth teenage girl, a witty pre-teen, and a three-year-old boy who takes pleasure in jumping from high places and landing flat on his face--are all in distress because of their father's absence, and the wife is on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Turner therefore is put in a position where he must help the children cope and become better individuals. The kids come to love Big Momma, which is a total rip-off of "Mrs. Doubtfire," but remain unaware that she is nothing more than a plastic lob covering a fast-talking man.

I suppose Turner thinks that leading the little girl's cheerleading squad to a championship victory, watching out for the smartelick teenager, and cheering up the family's depressed Chihuahua with a bottle of booze is more important than national security. There are a band of villains, none of whom we are introduced to or come to despise simply because the movie is too lightheaded and more intent on dumb jokes than it is on effectiveness. This is probably the first time since "The Man" that I did not have a clue as to what the characters on screen wanted to accomplish or obtain.

"Big Momma's House 2" comes billed as a comedy, but it only earns maybe two big laughs and the rare grin from me. There is an absolutely brilliant scene at a spa where hot rocks melt through the latex on Turner's Big Momma suit, and he is forced to jump into a mud pool. There is also the ongoing joke of the family dog, who is saddened over the loss of his girlfriend, but finds solace in liquor. Everything else is basically a muddle of sexual innuendo and situational lunacy, but, thankfully, there is no bathroom humor or fart jokes to be found.

Aside from the occassional giggle, "Big Momma's House 2" is a mess across the board, being a flat and unfunny romp that is hardly worth the reel it was filmed on. With the exception of Lawrence and the beautiful Nia Long, the film is devoid of any talent. But the lack of humor, originality, and exceptional acting is not even the worst part. At the end, a "Big Momma's House 3" is disturbingly hinted at, but I am praying to God that the filmmakers will do us a favor and leave the future adventures of Malcolm Turner to our imaginations. - Isaac

1.0 out of 5 stars Another unnecessary sequel, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Big Momma's House 2 (DVD)
I liked the original Big Momma House. Its was silly at times but it was funny as well as fun and I enjoyed myself watching it. This sequel lacks everything that made the first one great. Big Momma's House 2 is easily the most boring comedy sequel of all time. I found myself checking the time every five minutes and 1 hour and 39 minutes have never felt so long.

The plot is pretty weak plus it shows no reason for Malcolm to be "Big Momma. At least the first one gave you a semi-believable reason for Malcolm going undercover as Big Momma. But this sequel is too lazy to give you a slightly believable one.

Martin looks like he's bored out of his skull and pretty much sleepwalks through the whole movie. The rest of the cast does the same. The villain in the first one(Terrance Howard's character) wasn't too shabby. The villains in this movie are pathetic. I don't think I laughed one time. I might have had a slight chuckle or two and maybe a silent grin but other than that I was pretty bored.

Big Momma's House 2 is one of the most unwanted sequels since Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps. It was only made out of greed to capitalize of fans of the first one but the only people that would like this movie are the are the Dawson's Creek audience. This movie is weak, banal and utterly soulless. Totally devoid of anything that made the original interesting and amusing. Only recommended to those that still find Bob Saget funny.

PS: you weirdos and pseudo rights activists need to quit trying to turn Amazon into your own pathetic political soapbox. The space says type reviews not silly rants you losers!

5.0 out of 5 stars oh Lord this was funny!, July 12, 2007
This review is from: Big Momma's House 2 (DVD)
i watched this last night at a friend's house. i never watched the first one, but watching this is making me get the 1st and 2nd. my pal and i couldn't stop laughing. it was funny! but i did find nia long's acting boring, untalented, and uninspiring; i don't think she's a good comedic actress or knows how to be funny. she doesn't have comedic timing. she probably goes better in dramatic movies. yes, this is not trying to win an oscar, yes, the actors acting are weak and unbelievable (are they supposed to be strong?), and the story line is weak ( for some strange reason i felt like i was watching scary movie; a movie that's parodying something funny), but the jokes are funny, and i honestly think if it wasn't for Martin Lawrence's portrayal of Big Momma this would have been a dud. i gave it 5 stars b/c it mad me laugh out loud so much that it substituted for the movies weak acting and story. the bottom line is i enjoyed it and it was highly entertaining. even the way martin speaks when he's big momma is funny!
