4.0 out of 5 stars An Oz Landmark this one, July 7, 2003
By
Seano (Down Under) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Big Name No Blankets (Audio CD)
This caused a true stir when it was released in 1985 and it stll rates highly now. This was the first album produced by a Aboriginal band that charted in mainstream white Australian culture. If nothing else then get it for 'Blackfella Whitefella' which is definitely an Oz classic (along with 'My Island Home' off 'Go Bush')and a song that is pertinent everywhere not just Oz. The Warumpis have recovered it since in a tougher style (think AC/DC) on the album 'Too Much Humbug' which is now out of print. Style wise this album is a mix of simple straight up rock, rockabilly, country and even a bit of swing/jazz, whatever the boys fancied at the time. Much of the lyrics are in the language of the Western Desert but English lyrics are provided in the sleeve for these tracks. Neil Murray was the only whitefella in the band and the principal songwriter but the heart of the mob was George Rurrambu the singer with such a stunning rock n roll voice. The band only gets together these days for special occasions mostly one off concerts. So this is a bit of a record of what was that is still a guilty pleasure now. Grab it now cause it'll be hard to find soon enough.........and if you like this then check out Neil Murray's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Australian musics most important records, October 17, 2001
This review is from: Big Name No Blankets (Audio CD)
This is a time piece, a statement, a learning and overall an aural experience seldom captured. A recording that takes you to the vast heart of Australia's desert lands. A recording that also takes you to the heart of the "real" Australians. The blistering guitar sounds on Waru, Mulga and Spinifex Plains, the rolling bass lines throughout, the atmosphere of Animal Song, the strength in the lyrics all makes this my all time favourite CD. And I think the anthem that should be inducted into all Australians, Black Fella White Fella is perhaps the most pertinent song ever written in Australia. Thanks Warumpi Fella's.
