5.0 out of 5 stars What is life without Emmet Swimming?, August 21, 1999

A dark and boring existence with nothing but backstreet boys pop and hardcore grunge Marilyn Manson unispired trash. I am so glad that I discovered this band 5 years ago. They are nice and humble guys. Once I saw this girl who saw them after a concert once, and she told them that they sucked. They gave her a box of candy. How many other bands would even listen to someone who didn't like them. I am happy to let you know that she is now one of their biggest fans. They make good music, and this album is no exception.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emmet's best CD with a mature sound, November 26, 2010

A unique, different sound and my favorite Emmet CD (I have all of them). This is a more mature album that their earlier work, which is fantastic in it's own right, but in this album the band's sound is much tighter. Like all of their albums, you can listen to the whole thing. If you are new to Emmet Swimming, I would buy this first and then hit up their earlier stuff. Songs like "Motorway" and "Turnstile" with a perfect mix of story telling lyrics, Todd's deep voice, and strong guitar riffs will immediately convert you into an Emmet Swimming fan. "Guru" and "Fist like a Glove" are strong openers, "Stealing from the Joneses" hits on modern day materialism and "Sunblock" is a great way to end the album, which is clearly meant to be listened to (and should be) from start to finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable album, December 3, 2002
By
"mamlin" (Austin, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Big Night Without You (Audio CD)
This is an above-average production with enough of a unique sound to rate '4 stars'. The tracks "Turnstile" and "Sunblock" are thoroughly enjoyable and, together, are worth the price of the whole album. "Motorway" is a close-cousin to "Turnstile" without the fulfilling chorus found in the latter. Lead singer Todd Watts' vocal quality gives the band's songs the unique sound that is a pleasant departure from the standard pop fare. Emmet Swimming is one of my more favored groups to draw on when I'm attempting to introduce mainstream pop fans to good-but-lesser-known groups. A recommended buy.

I cannot stop listening to this cd-it is amazing. Ever since my cousin introduced Emmet to me last summer, I fell in love with them! He's from the D.C. area and is familiar with them, and hopefully this summer I will get to go see a CONCERT LIVE and hear the best band in the world! Keep up the good work guys, you're going to go places-undoubtedly.

Emmet Swimming is by far a rising band that will someday make it to the top. They are AWESOME on this cd and deserve plenty of airtime for it. So buy their record and begin showing them off to the nation so they become one of the best bands there is out there!

5.0 out of 5 stars album of the year, May 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Big Night Without You (Audio CD)
It's criminal that this band isn't one of the biggest rock bands in the world. This album is more meaningful than any I've heard in a long time. I stumbled onto it almost by accident. No question the album of the year.

I've loved these guys for years and they just seem to be getting better every album. Tell -all- of your friends about them. They need all the pub they can get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting and hypnotic album, March 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Big Night Without You (Audio CD)
With traces of the Gin Blossoms or Better Than Ezra, Emmet Swimming writes gorgeously crafted songs that tell of broken lives and macabre truths that lurk below life's polished exterior. "Turnstile," a song of suicide on a children's merry-go-round, is unforgettable with its conflicting imagery of vertigo, despair, and childhood innocence. And "Motorway" captures, in a way like no other song I know, of that sense of lostness and confusion when two people lose what they had, and find themselves strangers. This is one of the best albums I have heard in years. Haunting lyrics, edgy, swirling guitars, and stunning vocals -- this is a band you must check out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot Damn, February 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Big Night Without You (Audio CD)
This is by far the band's best album to date. The random remix of "Arlington" with acordians leaves much to be desired, but the following "Turnstyles" is one of the best songs the band has written in their career. It certainly holds its own as one of hte finest albums to come out of Virginia in a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Virginia Band gets better and better..., August 14, 1998
By
Shawn & Julie Brann (Lake Ridge, Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Big Night Without You (Audio CD)
Perhaps I'm a little biased (being a fellow Northern Virginian and George Mason Univ. alum), but "Big Night..." is another exceptional showcase by emmet swimming. I absolutely adore "Turnstile" (does this song remind anyone of their own life-come on!) and "Motorway", and the last track "Sunblock" was the perfect pre-vacation song. Get to know emmet swimming's "Big Night..." and previous two releases-you WILL NOT be disappointed.
