This will be short. The movie is one of my favorites, ever. The romance is moving and both realistic and idealistic at the same time. Hemingway and O'Toole take a relationship that should be a joke and make it touching and believable. O'Toole is excellent as the eccentric professor. 1.0 out of 5 stars Beware-Bad Pan and Scan
I love this movie, but I HATE, HATE, HATE this DVD. It is the worst transfer I have ever seen on a DVD. It is full screen, but the pan and scan is terrible. You lose about 50 percent of the image from the VHS version. There are scenes where you can't even see the people talking in the scene because they are on the extreme right and left. You are left looking at a...

This will be short. The movie is one of my favorites, ever. The romance is moving and both realistic and idealistic at the same time. Hemingway and O'Toole take a relationship that should be a joke and make it touching and believable. O'Toole is excellent as the eccentric professor. The theme of love is what holds the movie elements together and it deals with love in many manifestations. I'm not Catholic, but it was one of the few films that didn't turn Catholics into jerks, and I really enjoyed that here was a young couple trying to find love without having to disparage their faith to do it. The movie is charming, witty and touching. If you're a cynic, it won't be for you; but if you believe in love, believe in the big picture, and believe in redemption; this is a film for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative genius, January 8, 2003

I must first start out saying that this is one of the few movies that has actually brought me to tears.
Boris and Barbara's relationship struck me as the most sincere and heart wrenching love affair that I have ever witnessed. Peter O'Toole is captivating as the eccentric scientist and David Ogden-Stiers has perpetuated his typecasting with his role as the arrogant intellectual.
This is the first major movie role for Ms Hemmingway and she shows flashes of the talent that made her so famous on TV a few years later.
This is a love story with a cast of suporting characters that make it shine. It also asks some very serious questions about the medical establishment and how terminally ill patients are treated. Your hopes will be raised and your heart be broken by this movie. It is well worth the cost.

You are left looking at a mostly empty room. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this DVD. If they ever release it on a widescreen, I'll buy it...but until then don't make the same mistake I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars An overlooked gem, March 6, 2005

This is one of the most obscure movies ever made by Peter O'Toole, undeservedly so. It's by turns whimsical, dramatic, romantic, and heartrending, with a cast that makes the most of a rather peculiar story. Nobody does the absent-minded professor bit better than O'Toole, David Odgen Steirs is sanctimonious and self-centered as usual, and Hemingway was an outstanding choice for the flaky Mellie. Even the theme (String Trio Rock, which has, sadly, never been released) will reverberate in your head for days afterward.

The biggest disappointments about this disc are the pan-and-scan presentation, which was poorly executed, and the lack of extras on the disc; no background, commentary, soundtrack information, discographies, or featurettes were included.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you get the big picture, you'll love this movie, January 11, 2005

What is the big picture? Well, you have to see the movie to understand what I'm talking about. Personally, I think I get the big picture and that's why I love this movie so much.

Peter O'Toole is great in this. So are Vincent Spano, Virginia Madsen, Mariel Hemingway, and David Ogden Stiers.

What can I say about this story? It's sometimes hard for me to explain it to people who haven't seen it. When some people hear "a man tries to regrow his dead wife" they sort of cringe and think it's some sort of weird sci fi or horror movie.

It's neither - it's a love story. Actually, it's several love stories. You've got the love Harry has for his late wife, the love between him and Millie, the love between Boris and Barbara, and even the love (non-romantic) between Boris and Harry.

Still, Creator is far from a typical "love story." It's very unique. I've never seen another movie quite like it.

It's got a great cast and great story with a nice mix of humor, drama, and romance. If you haven't seen it, you should give it a try.

If you're the sort of person who gets "the big picture," you'll probably end up liking this movie a lot.

Peter O'Toole is one of my favorite actors & this is (I think) his best movie. In my mind, it is the greatest movie that nobody has ever heard of.

It is a tale about a doctor (O'Toole) who wants to clone his dead wife. However, the movie is about a lot more than that. He and his graduate assistant learn about love, friendship and the "big picture." It is kind of a cross between a drama and a comedy. Quite a deep movie that will make you laugh and leave you in tears as the final credits roll up the screen. Anyone who likes either Peter O'Toole or great intellectual movies (or both) will love this one. A fine flick!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best movie, ever!, December 5, 2002

What can I say that has not already been said. Via the most unlikely premise of a man trying to clone his dead wife; the story, the characters and the actors of this beautiful film convey a message of love, hope and humanity which is deeply inspiring. This is best movie you've probably never heard of. I am so delighted that it's made the transition to DVD. It would be a crime for this movie to be lost. I first saw this movie as a young teenager and nearly twenty years latter I've yet to be touched as deeply by anything in print, film or music. (Alright, "Schidler's List", moved me more, but this movie will move you equally far in the direction of joy.)

If you take a chance on only one old-movie-you've-never-heard-of-but-people-seem-crazy-about this year: if you only take one chance like this your in your whole life, make it this movie.

Just the best of the best. I have seen this movie at least 30 times and it never fails to make me laugh, cry, and clap (even when I am by myself!). It is a wonderful blend of talent, the story, the cast, the score, and everything else you watch and love a movie for. Peter O'toole is wonderful, as are David Ogden Stiers, Virginia Madsen, and Vincent Spano. I have not seen a movie before or since that has had the impact on me that Creator has had. Some things just can't be put into words, but must be seen to be appreciated. This movie is one such thing.

Clearly this is O'Toole's funniest role since "The Ruling Class". "Creator" is a heart-wrenching love story blended with a brilliant comedy. The score is fairly memorable as well.
