5.0 out of 5 stars His music does entice your soul and draws you into his world
Dusty's music does entice your soul and draws you into his world. The sounds Dusty produces with his guitar are so haunting and beautiful. As I listened to "Sunset on Big River (instrumental)" I can see Dusty setting on his front porch barefoot playing his guitar, eyes closed and letting his fingers gently slide across the strings.

Moon Goin' Down is loose...

I would not recommend this CD to anyone. If your looking for the Delta Blues/Country Blues, this is not it. What a letdown. I'll keep buying the old Prewar stuff. I took a gamble on this one and was truely disappointed. It sounds like someone turn on a tape player and recorded somebody playing around. Just a letdown considering the title of some of the songs.

Moon Goin' Down is loose and you can hear Dusty's foot tapping on the floor as he plays. He plays his guitar like there is no tomorrow on this one! He tells his story about leaving this world, and not being afraid to die. "The moon is goin down and the sun is gonna shine and I will be fine." Thanks to his Doberman's for keeping the Devil from his door, I do believe Dusty will do ok on that one.

His song "Deal with me" (On Your Judgement Day). He sings about being a Devil on the prowl, under the darkness of the moon's light and having as much fun on this earthly plain. The bottom line is he will enjoy his life to the fullest before his judgement day. But then again don't we all want to do that deep down?

Dusty's music it is earthy, strong, loose, laidback, rough and it has the diversity of many slide guitar styles. His music is true of a great blues player and brings to life the country blues stylings of Charlie Patton, Tommy Johnson, Son House, Fred McDowell, Skip James, Willie Brown, and many others.

I call Dusty my blue eyed devil in blue jeans and he has come a knocking at my back door. For his music will entice, enchant you, draw you in, and it will go straight to your soul. Dusty's CD is a must have if your a lover of the blues

4.0 out of 5 stars True Country Delta Blues, December 21, 1999

I like 'Big River Blues'! Being raised in the early 50's and 60's in Biloxi, Mississippi, I grew up listening to this music, from the worksongs I would hear the chain gangs sing to the simple single string slide playing my old neighbor would play, that would make the hair stand up on my neck. This music might not be eveyones cup of tea ( Sonny Bono ? I dont think so ), but to me and my own humble opinion, it stands right up there with anything today in this style. The more I listen to it with Bukka White, Son House,& Blind Willie McTell , the more I like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Deepest of Blues, April 2, 2000

'Big River Blues'slowley grew on me... at first, I kinda liked it,his deep voice and slide playing intrigued me, but the more I listened, the more I understood what Dustin was saying " that Life is to short to dwell on the Negative, and to make every minute in Life count, that we should make the most of the short time we have in this World and to accept that someday we will all die and by accepting this we live a fuller more positive Life' I have emailed him a few times, and he always makes me smile with his emails, a very Enlightened Gentleman...and I look forward to seeing him live soon and his next release, Peace , Becky

Acoustic blues at its best! Masterful slide guitar, with words full of the shadows of life and death.Pull up a chair, look out over Big River, and listen to the wind whispering through the pine trees as the sunsets.Sends chills up your spine.Paul Gerimiah sings "Seven men going down to the cemetery six men comming back" Dustin Sommers sings"Have you ever heard this coffin sound?(tap..tap)have you ever heard this coffin sound?(tap..tap) "

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Personal and Relaxed style of Acoustic Slide Blues, August 30, 1999

I like 'Big River Blues' for its simple and low-tech approach to the music...you can close your eyes and hear Dusty's foot taping, hear his soft moans and breathing, and a mischievous laff, and when you open your eyes, you almost expect to see him silhouetted by the Full Moon..... Music of this caliber is rare these days when ,I believe, so much is over-produced and santized to the point of so called 'perfection' that it becomes heartless!! The strength in 'Big River Blues' is that the music comes from his heart....just a lonely Bluesman and his guitar playing as the sunsets.......and slowly fades...

1.0 out of 5 stars don't get fooled again!, December 17, 1999

Dusty Sommer's "singing" would make Sonny Bono's fans cringe. "OH LORDY LORD LORD" (He actually sings this!). This is so cornball and his slide guitar playing, which is almost passable, is so far back in the mix that this effort is not "raw", but more like inept! please don't get ripped off as I did after seeing an ad the the Allman Brothers fanzine "Hittin' the Note" for this CD. For Delta style slide fans, better stick to the old timers or the "new wave" of electric/acoustic sytle players.
