Delightful!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Big Big Sea (Paperback)
My 18 month old son has loved this storybook for several months now. There aren't too many words on the page (1-4 sentences) and they have a nice rhythm to them, and the paintings are so magical. It really captures the feeling of the magic of the ocean at night. He loves to point out the moon and the beach and the mountains which are "far far away, right around the bay." It's definitely his favorite storybook.

"so we went..."Our family has memorized this wonderful book. My toddler son loves the realistic illustrations. The moonlight and the water make for a beautiful memory for this little girl and her mama. With short sentences and brief text, it's perfect for a 2-year-old. Heartily and highly recommended!

A beautiful journey,

I love this book. The prose is simple and lyrical. The near monochrome illustrations are beautiful and complement the text perfectly. And the setting - Murlough, Co Down, Ireland, near the author's home - is gorgeous. I have to confess that it's my home too. The walk that the mother and daughter take, through the dunes to the sea, begins at a point no more than 400 yards from the house where I grew up.
Even if it weren't such a sentimental favorite for me I'd still recommend it strongly. The simple story and the drawings and the calm meter of the evocative prose make it perfect bedtime reading. Both my children loved it even before they knew the area as Granny's Big Big Sea.

I cannot think of a more beautifully illustrated book than this one. The dreamy pictures of a mother-and-daughter escapade on the beach, followed by a sleepy night's end, move me every time I read it. With simple, slow-paced text, it makes for a very nice bedtime story.

I found this book at a bookstore in Cape Cod while on a vacation. My daughter was 8 months old at the time. She is 5 now, and this book remains our favorite to read together. On her 2nd birthday I had a picture from the book scanned on her birthday cake. This book will be one we read for years to come.

Again, please, again,
By "mnolteca" (CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Big Big Sea (Paperback)
This book was read to us at a local story-time. My 3 year old daughter's eyes were wide with wonderment. At the end, she yelled out "Again, please, again." Sadly, there was no time for the teacher to read it again, but I copied down the name of this wonderful book and am about to buy it. The story is perfect for mothers to read to their daughters (and sons as well) and the illustrations are beautiful. What child does not long for the sea and for the moon? The words and pictures make them come alive.

This is THE WAY LIFE SHOULD BE for all kids - young and old.,

Beautifully illustrated, and a wonderful story about going to see the sea in the moonlight. I had tears in my eyes from the wonder and joy of the little girl as she ran into the water in the moonlight and "there was only me and the Big Big Sea." What a great mom, to wake her daughter in the night to go get all wet in the moonlight! Such a wonderful memory to give a child. I'll look for more by this author

A chance to have a fairytale-like experience that is real.,

A moonlit sea with smooth white stones is a very special seashore landscape and beautiful to behold in the BIG BIG SEA. I like it to round out the daytime seashore look of MALINDA MARTHA AND HER SKIPPING STONES(also available on amazon.com) with the stones illustrated like the gems they become with the sunlight and water upon them. Playing on the seashore by sunlight or moonlight can be every child's experience with this pair of books. THE BIG BIG SEA is a wonderful idea.

Such awarm and loving story,

My parents are both from Northern Ireland and I have visited the spot the author writes about. My daughter received this book as a gift form her Irish cousins and we just love it.
The words flow beautifully and the illustration of the little girl reminds me of myself at that age and wish my mother and I had gone to The Big Big Sea at night. I will take my daughter one night soon. |
