Book Description

Police Detective Karen Seagate is having a rough time with her family, the police department, and her drinking. A high-profile murder that has the Chief breathing down her neck is not what she needs, especially with a brand new partner just promoted from uniform rank. Still, Seagate intends to track down the killer. The victim, Arlen Hagerty, created plenty of enemies as he clawed his way to the top of his Soul Savers organization. The organization's founder, whom Hagerty shoved out of the way, Hagerty's wife, his mistress, his debate partner, and the politician he was blackmailing--all had reason to wish him dead. But who would kill a man who was dying anyway? Author Mike Markel creates a compelling mystery with intriguing and conflicted characters in his first novel.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Big Sick Heart is the first book in the Detectives Seagate and Miner Mystery series. The sequel is Deviations. Coming soon: The Broken Saint.

I want to thank the many readers who have sent me gracious messages about these books. I appreciate them all.

If you haven't tried Big Sick Heart, I invite you to do so, and I hope you enjoy it.

Grammar warning: This book is written in the first person. The narrator, Detective Karen Seagate, makes a handful of grammar errors. By contrast, her partner, Detective Ryan Miner, is better educated and is error-free. This is one small way in which I characterize my two detectives. I bring this up because a few readers have commented on my poor grammar. If this were my most serious sin as a writer, I'd be happy indeed. But the grammar errors are on Detective Seagate. I'll take responsibility for the book's other shortcomings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Such A Shame September 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This author has lost out big time because of one serious flaw: they didn't vet their formatting for their mobile reading edition! How can a reader stay "in the story" and enjoy how the plot and characterizations develop when there end up being hundreds of missing chunks of text every time there's hyphenation at the end of a mobile screen's pagination!

Authors involved in self-publishing and / or self-promotion have GOT to take a hand in making sure their e-versions function correctly.

There's corrupted software out there destroying your publishing effort.....and other authors stealing your readers because THEY vetted their editions better. NOT that they necessarily wrote a better story....just because they were more careful with their production software.

As I said in my title, it is such a shame this author didn't do their production homework so I could have focused on the story they intended to present!

5.0 out of 5 stars Waiting For The Sequel October 2, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As someone who really enjoys crime fiction, I found Big Sick Heart to be excellent. It was a fast read (probably because I couldn't put it down) with a very interesting story line. More than that, though, I finished the book and immediately went to see if the author had written a sequel. I feel like I "know" Karen Seagate (with all of her demons) and Ryan Milner well enough now to want to see them together again. This book will not disappoint you!

5.0 out of 5 stars I want more of this! May 31, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
First: I couldn't put this out of my hands and read it through in one go.

It's not only a well written mystery story, it is a study of characters that stands proudly for itself. The leading characters, detectives Ryan Martin and Karen Seagate are so well and realistically described that they begin to live in your mind and your soul, that you feel you can touch their emotions and affections. You feel that you have been there and met people just like them. It's always so great when you meet characters that seem to breathe and live a life all of their own. Sometimes I felt compelled to get inside, to prevent one character from doing something or help someone to accomplish something else.

The "simple" muder case that develops into something far more threatening and dangerous is well grounded and is controlled all the time, steadily rising the tension and the apprehension. I can't wait to see more of this author and this series.Great one!
