Phil Cody Rides Again,
By Jason Wilson (Orlando, Florida USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Big Slow Mover (Audio CD)
While delivering less wordsmith-razzle-dazzle than his first record, Phil Cody has turned out yet another truly amazing piece of work. His songs follow you out of the bar and go home to live inside your head like something you have known all your life. From the Pogues like rant-a-long of Joyride to the delicate and acidic wit Wicked Cold Waltz, Phil Cody is truly the hope of the dying singer-songwriter. This album is intelligent, well-played, and sung with grit and earnest passion. In a perfect world Phil Cody would be a big star but, things being what they are, he will just have to settle for being the best at what he does.

Great collection of diverse songs,

Never had heard of Phil Cody, until one of his songs was played on one of my favorite radio programs on Dutch radio (pages.vpro.nl/3voor12/shows/index.shtml)and I read a bit more about him Most of the songs are straight forward, simple but catchy and Phil might not be the best singer in the world, in harmony with others (like Emmylou Harris) he manages very well. Production is sober, consistent. It is a great album. I specially like Wicked Cold Waltz, Big Slow Mover, 40 Winks Of Sleep (with Joe Henry), and of course Townes Van Zandt's If I Needed You. Enjoy.
