I've recommended this series of books to several friends who have enjoyed them too. Not much fodder for book club discussion, but good, summertime reading.

This is the second book in the Big Stone Gap series. I thought both were excellent. The author's writing style appealed to me. The subject matter was entertaining as well as personally relevant to me. This is my favorite type of book - mostly autobiographical, very entertaining, and insightful. I look forward to reading more by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great follow-up, but more serious than the first., September 19, 2009
This review is from: Big Stone Gap Big Cherry Holler (Paperback)
The second installment in the The Big Stone Gap series finds Ave Maria and Jac Mac in trouble. Their son has died of leukemia and their marriage is failing. In a last ditch effort to try to save the marriage, they spend the summer apart. Jac Mac in Big Stone Gap and Ave Maria in Italy with their daughter, Etta.

This was a great sequel to Big Stone Gap. The wonderful cast of characters from the first book is back. I didn't find them as funny this time around though. As a matter of fact, I spent a large portion of the book with tears in my eyes. So, it's not as funny as the first one, but definitely a good read. The one thing I didn't get though, is why she titled the book Big Cherry Holler. Big Cherry Holler is only mentioned in one part of the book and only for a moment. Oh well...I'm still looking forward to the next one.
