"The Big Stretch: New Music For Tubas" is tubist/composer Jim Self's 6th and latest CD. It is a showcase for his new compositions and for those of Jerome Grant, Maria Newman and Kim Scharnberg. A big variety of styles from classical to jazz and commercial are featured with virtuoso performances by Jim and 15 great L.A. studio musicians including: Tommy Johnson, Gene Pokorny, Norm Pearson, Winston Morris, Fred Greene, Doug Tornquist, tubas; Loren Marsteller, euphonium; Malcolm McNab, trumpet; Bill Booth, trombone and Los Tubas (a group of "loose" L.A. tubists). Of special note are POLKA.COM--a "wacky" piece for solo tuba that sounds like a mix of Frankie Yankovic, Donna Summer and Scott Joplin; and the FINALE to Tchaikovsky's SYMPHONY NO.4 for six tubas.

Of the many fine albums Jim's released, I'd have to say this is one of my favorites! It's aptly described in the liner notes as "everything but the kitchen sink", and the net result is just good, fun listening. Jim shows his talents here not only as a musician, but a fine composer as well. A world-class musician surrounded by other world class musicians - how can you go wrong with that? You don't have to be a tuba player to appreciate a well-produced, highly-polished piece of work...
