5.0 out of 5 stars A must see for families in the submarine community

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a cartoon, but a fairly good video.
My grandsons, aged 3 and 5, have enjoyed this video. The cover might make one think it's a cartoon, but it's actually quite factual, showing the inside of working submarine. Not a video they'll watch over and over, but they did learn from it and will watch it from time to time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must see for families in the submarine community, March 25, 1999

This review is from: Big Submarine [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a wonderfully written video targeted to children, but great for adults as well. It shows the basics of the submarine community, mostly from the Ohio class perspective, but includes information about the Los Angeles class and rescue subs. This video explains everything (using children as narrators) from how the boat submerges to how food is stored for such a long time. It shows "angles and dangles," how the sub "sees" in the water, the mess and sleeping quarters among numerous other things. The video also explores the training side of the submarine community, showing men in simulations for fire drills and major pipe leaks. There is also a short segment on weapons systems, but it cleverly skips over the purpose of such a payload. The Big Submarine gives a wonderful perspective of what Daddy does when he goes away for such a long time! I recommend this video to all submariner families, regardless of what class of submarine you are attached to. It makes a great stocking stuffer or gift for any occasion, whether you are currently active duty or retired.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super!, April 4, 2007
This review is from: The BIG Submarine (DVD)
The Little Mammoth video series is very well done. This particular DVD, The BIG Submarine, is another educational and FUN video that is great for the whole family.

See what it is like aboard a real submarine! I like that the video details the kind of training and education that submariners undergo, showing that there are dangers, but that the crews are well-equipped and well-trained to handle various emergencies. Also, did you ever wonder about how they get oxygen for the crew? Find out on this exciting DVD!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great learning experience, August 8, 2005
This review is from: The BIG Submarine (DVD)
A great video for kids, narrated by kids. Contains technical information but does not go over a child's head. Good for 4 years old up to at least 10 years old. Even Dad enjoyed it and learned a few new things. A great family and educational video to watch over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Everybody, October 27, 2003

My toddler absolutely loves this video. Even for a non-submarine family, it is chalk full of interesting material regaurding submarines and life on a sub - everything from how food is stored, to where the crew sleeps and more technicle data like how the sub goes under or what happens if a submarine sinks to the bottom of the ocean. This is the number one request of my son everytime we go to the library!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Big Submarine, March 21, 2009
This review is from: The BIG Submarine (DVD)
This movie is wonderful. I teach 4th grade and also have a son serving on a Trident submarine (the submarine shown on the video). I use it as a combined Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts lesson. The kids enjoy the "science" lesson they learn, and then are able to use the information they learn to write messages and create artwork to send to my son's crew before they leave on deployments. The language used makes learning about life on a submarine easy to understand, and all the kids have nothing but positive comments when they are finished viewing the movie. They are really concerned about sending the sailors positive messages and want to let them know they appreciate what they do.
A great video and teaching tool!
