Book Description

September 7, 1998
A very accessible, step-by-step guide that provides simple yet meaningful ways to discuss this crucial subject. Makes talking about sex easy and opens lines of important communications between parents and children. Bravo!" —Rabbi Steven Carr Reuben, Ph.D. author of Children of Character: Leading Your Children to Ethical Choices in Everyday Life.

"Comprehensive, dignified, conscientious, and nurturing...Very worthwhile for teens and their parents." — Irving N. Klitsner, M.D., F.A.A.P., Founder and former Director, Teen and Young Adult Health Care Center, Kaiser-Permanente of Southern California and Professor of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, USC and UCLA.

You know that it's important to talk with your kids about sex. But if you're like most parents, you get tongue-tied just thinking about having "the big talk." Even if you know exactly what you'd like to say, you may have no idea when or where to begin, or how to get your message across. This book can help.

The Big Talk shows you how to have warm, nurturing conversations about puberty, dating, relationships, and sex. Drawing upon hard-won personal experiences and the experiences of teens and parents whose stories appear throughout this book, Laurie Langford makes communication easy. She shows you how to talk about values and self-respect, setting high standards and sticking to them, and having fun with members of the opposite sex without being pressured into sex too soon. She also supplies sample dialogues, games, role-playing exercises, and other useful tools for breaking the ice and keeping the lines of communications open.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The world is a much more dangerous place for sexually active teenagers than it was just 20 years ago. Parents preparing to talk with teens about sex and dating know the stakes are high. The Big Talk helps to ensure that the discussion is effective and honest. Author Laurie Langford covers not only how parents can explain what happens to a child's body during puberty, but also how to set high sexual standards and stick to them despite the often intense pressures of dating and saving face with peers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading information that can cause more damage than good., July 21, 1999

I would prefer a no star review. This is the first book I"ve picked up that warns of the "dangers of masturbation". So, I guess since she advises against sex before marriage also that one just needs to wear a chastity belt throughout his developing years, not watch tv, look at magazines, listen to music, look at others (one might become aroused and then what?). This book takes us back about a century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just What I was Looking For!, July 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Big Talk: Talking to Your Child about Sex and Dating (Paperback)
As a Christian Mom of two lovely daughters I have been looking for an appropriate source to use in discussing dating and sex. This book gave me great suggestions, analogies, and reasons for discussing these topics, and uses language they can relate to. The book speaks for high morals and strong values without being pretentious and "preachy". I think it is super, and would recommend it to anyone with teens just entering the dating scene.
