5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone should own a complete set!, May 6, 2005
These books are great! The illustrations are amazing and the characters will capture your heart while teaching children the truths about God. With each page the story just comes to life and the energy of the characters really draw you in.

These books make a perfect gift for any child or a unique baby shower gift for those who are expecting. Joey has not only presented the truth of God in easy to understand books, but his illustrations really come to life. I love them all!

Be sure to read the Forward and A Word to Parents in this book. It is a great message to adults as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, October 19, 2007

This review is from: Big Thoughts For Little Thinkers: The Scripture (Little Books of Big Thoughts) (Hardcover)
The Scriptures, part of the Big Thoughts for Little Thinkers series, attempts to explain to young children what the Bible is and why it's important in our everyday lives.

Author and illustrator Joey Allen begins the book by having Gabe, a lively and friendly little boy, introduce himself. "The Bible is the most important book in the whole world!" Gabe says.

Gabe asks readers to consider what life would be like if our parents never spoke to us, or never taught us to tie our shoes or say our ABCs. Then he asks us to consider what it would be like if the one who created us never spoke to us and never told us how best to live. "But God has spoken!" Gabe exclaims. First, he points out that creation can tell us some things about God. Then he says we can learn even more about God by reading the Bible.

Gabe explains that the Holy Spirit directed specific people to write the Bible. He describes the tone of the Old Testament and says the "entire Old Testament points to" a Savior, who would come in the future.

"When Jesus came to earth, He showed us what God is like. Jesus acted like God and talked like God because He is God! When we learn about Jesus in the Bible, we are learning about God."
Gabe explains that "people who believed in Jesus gathered together all the books that come from God" and put them in one book, called the Bible. He tells us about 40 people wrote the books of the Bible, including a fisherman, a doctor, and a farmer. He explains that the Bible wasn't written in English originally, but that God protects the message of the Bible, no matter how many languages it's been copied into.

Gabe explains that God always tells the truth and always keeps his promises. Therefore, "every morning when you wake up, you can be happy because the Bible says God is with you, and one day you will be with Him in heaven." The Bible, Gabe says, teaches us how to live as God wants us to: loving God and other people. The Bible also helps us grow and protects us from sin and other things that can hurt us. If something in the Bible is tough to understand, Gabe urges us to find someone who's been a Christian for a long time, and ask them if they can help us understand it better.

What I Like: This book speaks truth with such clarity; what an ideal introduction to the Bible! All the assertions are backed up by biblical verses, and the cartoonish (but not crude) illustrations are inviting. I also like the child-friendly size of this book (about 6 inches by 6 inches).

What I Dislike: The term "Holy Spirit" is never explained, so parents should be prepared for questions on that. Also, there is paragraph in this 32 page book that offers so weak an argument, it doesn't belong in this otherwise fine volume. Gabe says the Bible is like no other book because "you can tell that it comes from God because it does not sound like something a human would make up."

Overall Rating: Excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Thoughts for Little Thinkers, August 8, 2009
This review is from: Big Thoughts For Little Thinkers: The Scripture (Little Books of Big Thoughts) (Hardcover)
These Books are very well written and with instructions to the Teacher. There are 4 books even though you only sell 3 of them. They were written and illustrated by a young man when he was in College. Latter he became a missionary to Bangladesh and had them translated. I buy sets to give away for gifts and for all my great grandchildren.

I love this series! A friend has them for their children, which is where I first saw them, and I decided on the spot that I wanted to get them for my children when the time came (I didn't even have kids yet at the time!). They are a bit too in depth for my two year old, but he will sit for most of it, and some times I just abbreviate the text. It will not be long however, for these to be right at his level.

The concept of the books themselves is excellent. Fundamental truths of the gospel are presented in easy-to-understand language, acknowledging children's ability to grasp much more than we often expect. It is not without reason that Christ told us to come as little children...

When I first received the books, I even found them refreshing for my own faith just to read through them. Sometimes, after being a Christian many years, you can find yourself loosing focus on the simple truths of the gospel; this series has the gospel on center stage in each book.

These books are great for little ones to learn, and parents too, as well. My daughter purchased these for the Dr.'s office that she works at and they have had a great response to them already.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book for easter, March 8, 2010
This review is from: Big Thoughts For Little Thinkers: The Scripture (Little Books of Big Thoughts) (Hardcover)
Looking for an Easter gift for your preschooler that delivers a message about Jesus instead of the Easter Bunny? I found these little books a few months ago but waited to review them until closer to Easter. They are the most unique christian books for little one's that I've come across.

Have you guys heard about the wonderful little series called Big Thoughts for Little Thinkers? This series teaches little children ages four to eight about the Bible. It isn't just Bible stories but fundamental teachings that preschoolers can understand. No kidding, I think I learned a few things! The illustrations are a big hit with little kids. I like that each page is based on scripture but reworded in a way that kids understand and are intrigued by. I do think that elementary age children may like these books a bit more than preschoolers because some of this is some pretty heavy stuff. What I like to do and recommend you do as well is introduce one page at a time, rather than try to read the entire book. I will say that there are parts that bother my little girl. It reads: "Everyone in the world has the same problem: we are all separated from God and deserve to die because of our sin." This might be a little heavy for three year olds.

The Trinity book explains to children that there is one God in three persons-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I have to say that the Trinity is a hard concept to understand even as an adult. This book explains, "There is only one God, but God is three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are all different from each other, but each one is God. This is called the Trinity."

The Scripture teaches children that the word of God is true. It helps little ones to understand that the Bibl comes from a heavenly source, that Christ is the center, and that the Holy Spirit is needed to properly interpret the Bible. It helps children to know that God speaks to them through the Bible. It helps children to understand the difference between the Old Testament and New Testament. This is my favorite of the little books.

The Mission is about sharing Jesus with other people. A favorite part of the book is "so many people need Jesus but there are not many messengers. God wants to use you to tell other people about Jesus and invite them to the party in heaven. You can be one of God's messengers! Isn't it fun to help your mom bake a cake or help your dad fix the car? You can help God tell people the good news about Jesus." The book goes on to tell little ones how to be part of the mission such as using talents to show people how great God is, get kids to tell their friends about Jesus, pray for those who haven't heard of Jesus, learning about missionaries, and so on. It's a great book to introduce mission work to little ones.

The Gospel is about salvation. Gracie talks directly to your child throughout the book and addresses fundamentals about God's unending love, how our sins separate us from God and how Jesus took the punishment for our sins so we can be reconciled with God.
