Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

Three vignettes feature Nick Adams, one of Hemingway's most colorful personalities, as the central character. Stephens's well-modulated voice seems inappropriate for the shocking battlefield descriptions filled with the dead and dying in the first story. He portrays a doctor's anguish and depression when his wife dies in the second short story. Stephen's melodic voice and dynamic descriptions capture the memorable fishing and camping experiences of the third story, "Big Two-Hearted River," often considered autobiographical. Anyone who enjoys outdoor experiences, especially fishing, will enjoy this listening experience. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

5.0 out of 5 stars Students connected with fishing, August 16, 1999
By A Customer
As a teacher in a juvenile detention center in the inner city, I enjoyed watching students connect with this story of fishing and other details. We discussed fishing techniques and even learned to fly-cast in the gym. Hemingway's delicate simplicity draws the reader to the depth of those woods and the fresh taste of the stream. He created, for those who have never fished, the thrill of the catch and the beauty of solitude.
