Tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh is an exceptional interpreter of the standards as well an extraordinary innovator of the improvisation. Listening to him play is always revelatory, and experiencing him team up with bassist Red Mitchell on this 2-CD, 22-cut session is abundant with melodic and rhythmic pleasures. The music is live, recorded in Fasching, a jazz club in Stockholm, Sweden, on April 18-19, 1980.
If you enjoy duets as I do, you will get something new from each of these songs, which brilliantly balance the cerebral and the swinging.
