Excellent books for phonics, January 4, 2004

This is an excellent books for learning phonics. It has child-friendly exercises and illustrations make learning fun. Use Big Workbooks to reinforce or review grade-level skills or prepare for the upcoming school year. Ten workbooks are included: Rhyming Families, Long Vowels, Short Vowels, Blends, Phonics Review, Spelling Puzzles 1, Spelling Puzzles 2, Reading Skills 1, Reading Comprehension 1, and Reading Comprehension. My preschool daughter went through this book in about four months and she can read all first and second grade books before getting into the first grade. It was amazing the fun my kid had with this book and the words she can read after this especially with the puzzles. It is very good for home schooling where parents can work with their kids.

Best Phonics Book for 1st-2nd graders!, August 15, 2005

School Zone never disappoints, but this particular book takes out the frustration of kids trying to learn new words and reading skills and makes it fun and takes it down to basics, instead of memorizing of a lot of "rules" by being told, or readin them (or worse, the rules of phonics not even being used in many books) this book take the letter groupings that words are put togehter with and SHOWS the kids using the book how the sounds go together!
From someone who has tutored, has helped a school choose text books (for home schoolers), and has looked for the best books to reduce stress and frustration and to stimulated learning in kids, this books beats the rest hands down!
With a few picturesd to help (but not too many, so the child becomes reliant on them like some books), this books gives clues, but then lets the child figure the patterns out (which is also helpful for math skills - patterning and such) as well as makes reading MUCH more fun and easy - skills are carried on into other areas and kids retain what is learned in this (and the other School Zone books I've seen.)
My granddaughter was VERY frustrated after 1st grade, but this book gave her the tools to see that readin IS fun and doesn't have to be an exercise in something she "has to learn or do." Now she hardly wants to put this book down (or her reading books for that matter!)
This book has helped her (and actually my kids also used School Zone books as an adjunct to public school, and were the top readers in their classes!)
I'd not only recommend this School Zone book for the younger kids, but their other books as well!
Kids learn many different ways and by many different styles, and School Zone seems to have the right recipe that fits just about any learning style!
Honestly, I was getting worried about my granddaughter's reading until she got ahold of this book (even was wondering if she was dyzlexic, which I later discovered was due to frustration, and makes me wonder if kids can lean that way if they get too frustrated!?!) She's now reading above grade-level books and is having a great time! We're looking forward to some great grades, but more important, she's reading and enjoying it! Her readin has improved 500% and we only received this book in the mail about a week ago!
It's a large book, but the pictures are colorful, friendly and the groupings are non-intimidating like some workbooks are for young readers.
If you want to help out a child who is struggling or boost an already great reader, this book will help a lot!
Also great for those "Spelling Bee"-ers to be out there!
