Product Description

If you found other Yoga videos a little challenging, here is a Yoga practice for you. Big Yoga Flex-Ability is a 60 minute adapted Yoga practice for anyone with weight, stiffness or injury issues. By using intentional breathing, and gentle flexing and relaxing, the body releases toxins from the joints, and strengthens the muscles that support them. Demonstrated on the floor, the poses can easily be adapted for practice in a chair, or even in bed. You don't have to be flexible to do Yoga!

About the Actor

Meera Patricia Kerr, author of Big Yoga: A Simple Guide for Bigger Bodies, is a senior disciple of Sri Swami Satchidananda and has been teaching Yoga since 1977. Her ground-breaking DVD, Big Yoga Hatha 1, released in 2005, is also available on Amazon.

This DVD starts out offering alternatives to traditional sitting positions, ways to make yourself more comfortable, more stable, different ways to position your hands, etc. It's not just for "big people". I'm actually average and have taken yoga in the past but have muscle pain in my neck and shoulders so I checked it out to see what it offered for stretching. Right away I knew this would perfect for anyone with health conditions that caused people stray away from traditional yoga but needed a good start with stretching.

Meera Kerr says that she has been teaching for 30 years and it is evident in her excellent, slow controlled descriptions of each exercise before she does it. I really like the way she frequently reminds you to be aware of your posture. During the entire stretching portion, she reminds you to stop if you need to and go at your own pace and make modifications as needed.

This is NOT a traditional yoga video - it is a nice stretching, controlled flexing of various parts of the body while sitting. She includes helpful stretches for those who do computers work and lots of upper back/ body stretches which is nice. There are some yoga type poses incorporated but as always, she offers alternatives.

There is a small Sun Salutation portion that is modified using a chair. I did think that was a bit more advanced than the stretching portion and not explained quite as well, but it can easily be skipped if desired. Or if you have some yoga background, you can easily do a regular sun salutation in it's place. The relaxation portion is excellent and should be done by all! My body felt cemented to the ground despite the dog barking her fool head off outside! Maybe Ms. Kerr did a bit of hypnosis along the way...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for after back surgery July 25, 2011
Verified Purchase
I found Big Yoga Flex-Ability at our local library. After one session - I decided that I wanted to own it. Big Yoga Flex-Ability gets you moving after surgery (I had spinal surgery) and does improve your flexibility as stated in the title. I recommended it to my mom who had knee replacement surgery and my sister with two hip replacements. Nothing fancy - very slow moving. Works all areas of the body. Anyone can do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR my 50-yr old spine! February 19, 2013
Verified Purchase
my first m.v.a. and spine injury was when i was 8 yrs old. I've been struggling with managing my back issues every since. This is fabulous. I also got my husband to do it with me and he sees alot of benefit. (Normally he spends about ten hours a week in a traditional gym doing traditional weightlifting and cardio)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Intro To Yoga February 23, 2013
By Cathy

I bought this DVD because I'm noticing some loss of flexibility as I get older. It has turned out to be a good yoga lesson for someone who has never done yoga. And after doing the main part of the DVD only four times, I'm already seeing results. The instructor gives calm, clear instructions and explains things well. I would have liked a few more exercises for legs, but all in all it's working pretty well for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not much April 18, 2014

I was looking for a gentle, restorative yoga DVD. This is WAY too tame, even for a 61 year old such as myself. Some breathing and chanting. Very little of what I'd call "yoga."

I really liked this product. I didn't realize how easy it would be but it was and the next day I was still very sore.
