5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful to me!, February 24, 2005

This review is from: Bigbiglove (Audio CD)
This is probablly one of, if not the greatest album to come out of australia in 2004. Little Birdy is an amazing band, blending rock, blues and country into one of the freshest sounds on the australian music scene. "beautiful to me" is just one such example of their irresistable melodies. "tonight's the night" "relapse" and "excited" all showcase the raw talent and creativity of this band's huge potential for success. Unfortunatley "this is a love song" did not make it onto the Perth band's debut album, but not to worry they have an Ep under the same title. This album will never leave your CD player, you won't be dissapointed with big big love. Katey Steele (sister of luke steele, lead singer of the sleepy jackson) has such a beautiful raw voice that has been compared to the likes of Kate Bush, PJ Harvey and Chrissy Hynde (and katey is the sexiest women behind a guitar). Katey is complimented beautifully by Simon Leach on guitar, Scott O'Donoghue on bass and backing vocals and the vibrant Matt Chequer on drums. Little Birdy is one of Australia's best new talents, don't miss out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Katie Steele Rocks, June 26, 2006

This is the first album from Little Birdy.

I must admit I was a bit sceptical when I first heard Little Birdy, Katie Steele's vocals are quite different and do take a little bit of getting used to, but after seeing the band live at a small venue in Melbourne, Australia I realised that this band rocked.

The album in quite short in length but the quality is sensational.

Do yourself a favour and purchase this, you will not be disappointed.

Also if you can get your hands on Katie Steele's version of "These boots are made for walking" released a long time before Jessica Simpson, you will see what I mean. Katie puts a lot more rock and sex appeal into it and makes it sound sensational.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sugar Poppy Melancholy, February 14, 2006

From the Western Australian alterno-pop-rock school (if that describes it), where most of Austrlia's good stuff has come from of late. Not soemthing I would normally seek out, but I really like it.

The obvious uniqueness with this is the vocals, can't think of who it reminds me of, some 80's sugar pop, like a girly girly high pitched smoker. Different, but really lends something to the jangly guitar driven music.

That said, a unique voice doesn't make a great singer or a great song, but these songs are really good if not better, and the singing is honest, heartfelt and edgy. The vocal melodies feed and soar from the melancholy love gone wrong music.

Well worth checking out along with Eskimo Jo, otherwise I'll stick to my wanky prog-rock.

4.0 out of 5 stars The most beautiful and powerful voice in Australia here to rock your world, April 19, 2007

Little Birdy are really popular in Australia, but if you're in another country you likely haven't heard of them.
Welcome to the pop-rock band Little Birdy. Made up of four male members and one lead female singer Katy Steele, with one listen you'll realise that she definately has one hell of a voice on her.

Big Big Love takes us through 13 songs of love, heartbreak, depression, the main focus in the lyrics is love but you won't get soppy ballads, you'll get an in-your-face power pack to make you want to grab a microphone, sing along and dance. Included are twisted and cute instrumentation that you'd never here on a usual pop song; that's because Little Birdy are unique and they do things differently. They don't produce the same song over and over again and they care about making their tunes sound good. This album is also worth getting for the extra track 'Baby Blue' which is another beautiful track showing off Katy's harmonising and high vocal range. You also get very nice cover art compared to the regular version of 'Big Big Love' which only has a drawn heart and no band members present. I must say that Katy looks amazing in this picture also.

I could also go on by saying that if you liked the music of such bands as 'Lash' (grungy girl bands with high powered tempos and strong yet sweet, angry yet mellow voices) then you might enjoy a Little Birdy record.

Little Birdy are one of Australia's most underrated but best bands that ever lived. Try the songs for yourself and maybe you'll love this album just as much as me.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the few unique rock albums, May 30, 2005
This review is from: Bigbiglove (Audio CD)
This is an alternative / rock debut album release from the original Australian quartet Little Birdy. The lead singer (Katy Steele) vocals are the most weirdest vocals I have ever heard. I can definatly see her Bjork influences in her voice and songwriting - she wrote 11 out of the 12 songs on Bigbiglove.

My favourites are the third single Excited, the high-energy Losing You, although my favourite is the incredibly weird and original: "Message To God".

The album displays a wide range of music genre's: country (track 3), alternative (tracks 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11), pop (tracks 4, 5, and 9) and rock (tracks 1, 2, 4, 10, and 12) It went Gold and peaked at #5 in Australia.

I strongly recommend this to fans of Bjork like myself - this album is overrated in a sense that it is perceived as "just another" new rock group but Little Birdy are not. Originality is their main strength.
I recommend this to alternative, rock, pop and/or country fans. One reason this album was such a breakthrough album was because it appeals to a very wide audience, as you can see.

Note: The live disk is also very good. Track 3, This Is A Love Song is bloody Amazing.
