The best gaming NIC you can buy,

Anyone who doesn't like this card, doesn't understand what it does.
This is not a normal NIC. The processor on the card actually bypasses the windows network stack. There is no other network card capable of doing this. The increase to frame rate and ping that the killer nic website brags about are actually not its biggest selling point for me. Those are just bonuses. The best thing about this card is its ability to smooth out network performance. This isnt measurable by numbers, but in how it actually feels in real world use. I honestly can not play online games without this card anymore. And the price? Your buying a linux cpu and extra ram. Its more than justified. If any of you were around years ago when seperate graphics cards were first released, than you will remember the flaming people who said "my standard mobo vid card is good enough". now those seperate graphics cards are virtually required for gaming. Well what if those seperate graphics cards were no better than the mobo card? there wouldnt have been a point. Thats what other network cards are like. They just toss packets through the standard process. This is the first and only NIC that outsources the network process the way a graphics card outsources the graphics process. Offloading all the work from the cpu. Bottom line is this: Does your computer suck? than yea, dont waste your time buying a $250 NIC. Do you actually care about your computer? Do you have a video card worth at least $200? do you play online games? This is the next step up. Just to compare; I bought a $400 graphics card right before I bought my killer. Swapping them out and comparing the performance increases, I get more net gain with the killer than I do with the graphics card alone. Obviously putting in both (for me) is the way to go. This is a whole new world for gaming. There is nothing else out there that can improve your online gaming in quite the same way; and any other upgrades your considering are still going to benifit from having the killer as well. Heck, for some of you with really high end gaming rigs that are already worth thousands, i cant imagine you wouldnt want to also improve your network connection performance. and for those of you with mid range systems, this card at this price is going to give as good or better performance increase than anything else you could upgrade to in this price range. I could go on ... and on... but honestly... i never expected it to be this good. and i cant imagine playing without it anymore. Not only that... but theres programs coming out that will be able to run on the killers processor without tying up cpu performance, try that with any other network card

The most common problem is with WINDOWS hanging. Very important, do this before you install the card. Go to CONTROL PANEL, open NETWORK CONNECTIONS, highlight any LOCAL connection, right-click and select PROPERTIES, a new window will open, in the GENERAL tab, highlight IPv6 and click-on UNINSTALL. Close all windows and REBOOT. Your NEW network card handles IP protocols, and windows just can't let go otherwise. In my Compaq SP750 DUAL P3 XEON PCI system, this card rocks! Worth the price. It helps OVERALL system performance, too. Before My Comcast latency was at 58-70, now its 41-55. Pages with lots of GRAPHICS/BANNERS/VIDEO load much quicker. My Tivo PC software cannot find my Tivo unit with the FIREWALL activated. So I just DEACTIVATE it when I want use my Tivo. Just follow the above instructions and it should work fine.

A Killer!,

I have had two expirences with the Killer Nic. I used it on my 5 year old computer about three years ago, and it was clearly a disappointment on that machine. I took it out and put it into storage.
For the last year I have been using a HP m9180f bought from Amazon and have enjoyed it very much. It is a pretty good gaming machine in its own right, however everyone in gaming catches up with the latest machines and even surpasses them fairly quickly. I noticed it was getting ever so much harder to get in the higher positions playing COD WW on multiplayer. So this week I though what the heck, lets give the old Killer Nic another chance at it. What a surprice! on the machine mentioned above, it became faster and MUCH smoother. I noticed on the first three games I entered I was 1st place twice and 2nd place once! quite an improvement on my recent game play. I only have the one video card Nvidia 8800gt, but now it seemed like it was running with two cards. Well to say the least I am well pleased with this developement, now my $300 purchase 3years ago is finally paying off! You know I can't really advise anyone on this card, it failed and made my first machine less than what it should have. And of course on the other hand it really helped my new computer. So I will leave it up to you, If you buy this card I think it will improve a newer machine with duel core quad cpu and video card of a newer generation DX9 and DX10. It does work with the right combination and the price has come down a bit. One last thought, The reason I gave this 4 stars and not 5 is the trouble with intergration into the computer was not smooth, I had to play a lot with the first computer to even get it run, and the second computer has some issues also but I finally got it working well with my Vista 64 operating system.

Nice, but not worth the money,
This review is from: Bigfoot Killer NIC 10/100/1000 PCI 400 MHz NPU RJ-45 USB 2.0 Retail (Personal Computers)
Honestly, I didn't really notice any noticeable speed increases over the 10/100/1000 mbps integrated NIC on the motherboard on the brand new computer that I built. I will say that the LEDs on the NIC, if you're building for a system for show, add a nice amount of internal vibrancy.
The NIC has the capability, if you're smarter than I am, to host subroutines written for linux which would run OFF the card itself and not require other system/hardware resources. Case in point: It's got Cadillac-level features that most normal computer users will never touch.

Being in Hawaii, I needed to bridge the gap across the pond to the states. Even with a rig that would make 99.9% of people in the PC builder community drool, latency and lag can still be a killer. So instead, I turned my connection into a killer :) I am very impressed with this card and reccomend it to anyone in the gaming community.

I have a Dell XPS Genereation 4. I put this item in my computer and had it working for about 10 minutes. I performed speed tests and fram rate tests on Call of Duty 4 with NO measureable improvements then on 2nd reboot had MAJOR memmory errors and Blue screen of death. I called Bigfoot tech support and they confirmed the item has "bugs" and "software coflicts". I had to reformat my hard drive to fix problem and now my computer works perfectly now. Don't waste your time or money on this fancy packaged gimmick. Buy it and you will be sorry you did. Posted 1/21/08.

After multiple attempts at getting this card to work (re-installations, cleaning out the registry) I decided to let it be and use my onboard NIC. This is where the fun began and everything I did would not work saying the NIC had limited connectivity and could not renew an IP address. Mind you, the drivers I was using were from June 4th, 2008 and I had to reinstall windows to get connectivity back.
Definitely do not purchase this because it messes up your pc NIC, is way overpriced, has non-existent customer phone support and the kicker is they actively censor any technical problems/issues you post on forums or anywhere else! Very shady and I would highly recommend to avoid and save yourself the nightmare of installing this junk.

This card really delivers. I have never seen World of Warcraft, CounterStrike, and Battlefield 2 play so fast before. It is much less laggy than it used to be without the Killer.
This card was worth the money for sure.

This might be a good product if you have the internet connections you need to make this work. However it did nothing to my grandson's computer and he has a Alien. So just make sure if you are going to purchase this, check with your internet provider, that this product will work on your computer.

I saw no change in network performance. A network is only as fast as its weakest link which will always be the ISP.
Furthermore, if you wish to play on a LAN, then all the computer connected will require the same card to get that extra 7% of whatever its promising. Honestly, a standard gigabit card with proper switching hub will be super fast and be alot less money. Unless your just buying it for the metal K which you cannot even see because its facing down in the case. All in all... your better of buying a better video card or more memory. |
