5.0 out of 5 stars No Stopping Chris Rock On A Roll...
Again another funny album that skewers all the right people in the tenderest of places.
School shootings, whiny white males, bad rappers, good booty, Hillary, Bill and Monica all get their just desserts from Rock.
About the sound...it's good. It's not the audience bootleg quality that some reviewers would have you believe...
It gives you that small...

1.0 out of 5 stars Just a re-run
This CD is just a bunch of the same material that is on Born Suspect only with really bad sound quality. It sucks and I want my money back. Really poor quality sound, horrible engineering.

It gives you that small comedy club feel with less of the bombastic audience response from his past album.
The song, No Sex (in the champagne room) really cracks me up.
A good investment if you want to laugh and forget all your troubles for just an hour or so.
Lighten up...the truth tickles.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Stand-Up Is Great, the Skits and Songs Are Hit and Miss, March 7, 2002
By
Tony C "Tony C" (Los Angeles, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bigger & Blacker (Audio CD)
It's unfair to rechristen Chris Rock as the New Richard Pryor, but if Mr. Richard Pryor has an heir to his throne, it is almost certainly Rock. On his third album (after the good BORN SUSPECT and the excellent ROLL WITH THE NEW), as he did with ROLL, he splits up the stand-up with skits and song parodies.
The stand-up is some of his best. The first two stand-up tracks, "Black Mall" and "Crazy White Kids," are among his greatest hits. Rock takes on such current events as Columbine ("'What music did they listen to?' WHO CARES?! What music did Hitler listen to? What was on his CD player?") and the Lewinski Scandal ("The President is a man, and a man is basically only as faithful as his options.") and talks about such timeless themes as homophobia ("There's no reason to be homophobic. Everyone has at least a gay cousin."), men having affairs ("It's the same two women: The one you love, and the one who loves you. One has the best...the other makes the best pancakes in the world.") and, yes, race ("There ain't a White man in this room who'd trade places with me, and I'm rich!"), sometimes profoundly, sometimes profanely, and always avoiding the cliches and stereotypes on which lesser comics coast. The only problem is the sound quality, which slides in and out, so be prepared to keep your finger on the volume control button.
As far as the skits and songs, Rock is a "Saturday Night Live" alumnus, and while he's one of the best of late, he demonstrates that show's biggest weakness. While the premises of his skits range from amusing to very clever, too many of them go on for far too long. His shorter skits ("ODB - W.O.W." #1, 2, 3; "Roger & Zapp," "Savion Glover") are hilarious, but some of his longer skits ("Nerd & Fly Girl," "Table Dance/Snow Flake") go on forever, long after they've ceased to be entertaining.
Still, his stand-up and his funnier pieces, especially "No Sex," "Me & ODB" and the divinely inspired ghost track, are worth sitting through his pieces that drag. And remember: There is no sex in the champagne room.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chris Rock balances great skits, songs and stand-up, February 25, 2000
This review is from: Bigger & Blacker (Audio CD)
Its no surprise that this album got the 2000 Grammy for best spoken comedy album. Chris Rock is funny! A near-perfect album, with a great balance of skits (Porno PSA, Nerd + Fly Girl), songs (Me and ODB, No Sex), stand-up (Crazy White Kids, Black Mall) and, as always, Dirty (ODB Words of Wisdom, 1, 2, 3). Chris is always showing us something new, fresh and original, always done Rock-style. Whether whining, bitching or whining again, this brother knows what hes talking about, and at the same time, defys the awful stereotype that rich black men are braggers, scrubs and not the same off stage. Keep it up, Chris, and I'll give my yearly $ to you.

Chris Rock just keeps getting funnier. The skits are great, especially the W.O.W from the ODB. I almost died laughing. Great stuff.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you liked Roll with the new, stay clear of this one!, August 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bigger & Blacker (Audio CD)
I guess the only people who like this cd are the ones that haven't heard Roll with the new, that one was excellent. I think this is just a very, very poor makeover (even his first cd was better)!! The same stuff, only a lot worse. Too bad!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truth CAN be fun......, August 24, 2000

Chris Rock understands better than anyone, how to make the truth sound hilarious, even though it might affect some people. Here is a guy who truly speaks his mind, no matter what the subject is. I guess to some minorities of people he is kind of rude, but hey? Maybe they should see it as a wake-up call, and try to change their lives?!?
As an objective listener you can't help laughing along, on the tiny facts and moments in life he deals with! It might or might not be his objective to actually change peoples mind in regards to certain matters, but it still makes one think and say: "He's absolutely right!" when you hear his jokes.
to me, Chris Rock is one of the most talented comedians around! His material is continuosly funny and can take the stress out of a hard days work, no matter when you hear it. So go ahead, let yourself be amused for a couple of hours by this brilliant album.
5 stars coming your way, Chris......

3.0 out of 5 stars Chris Rock has GOT to get a better audio mixing crew, October 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bigger & Blacker (Audio CD)
C-Rock's got a great routine this time. If any of you have seen it live on HBO, you know how funny it is. But the way this CD was recorded, it sounds like it was in some cheap, ghetto lounge--and once you've heard the response of the audience in the Apollo Theatre, hearing anything else just sounds weak. Fortunately, some of the non-stand-up tracks, like "No Sex," help the CD out. But this is the first time I've heard a hilarious performance and didn't feel like laughing. I mean, if the audience doesn't start cracking up, why should you?

2.0 out of 5 stars Quite a disappointment, August 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bigger & Blacker (Audio CD)
After seeing the stand-up special on TV, I had high hopes for this album. There were parts of it that had me in tears from laughter. Too bad none of them are included on this album. "Table Dance" and "No Sex" are, in fact, the only bright points from the album and each one accounts for one star of the rating I gave it. I'd expected better, especially after hearing "Roll With the New" (a six-star if there ever was one), but it seems that he just couldn't deliver. Even the quality of the sound isn't up to par here; his stand-up tracks sound like you're listening to a twenty-year old tape deck. The only comfort I can take is that his next one will be better. It certainly couldn't be much worse.
