This is a strong album by one of the top rappers of all time. LL was really at the top of his game here. His rhymes were fresh and often funny. And his deejay Cut Creator provided some excellent samples for him to rap to. The album included his first hit single, "I Need Love", which was also the first important rap ballad. Fans of old school rap should enjoy this album a lot.

My LL Cool J "Bigger and Deffer" Review,
By Mister E "Big Will" (Right Behind You) - See all my reviews

This is possibly one of my favorite albums of all time. I remeber hearing songs off this when I was like in third grade. Matter of fact I need love is what really got me hooked on Rap/Hip-Hop. I can pretty much listen to this album start to finish and not skip through a song. LL was a beast back then. Your talkin about a guy who used to murder cats in a battle. Some say Uncle L has fell off and maybe his subsequent albums have not been as good, but this album right here is the truth. I used to listen to this album every day in fourth and fifth grade and it inspired me to write lyrics of Cool J's in love letters to girls(too funny). This album will always hold a special fondness in my heart. Here is the breakdown of my ratings:
1. I'm Bad-5 Stars 2. Kanday-5 Stars 3. Get Down-4 Stars 4. The Bristol Hotel-5 Stars 5. My Rhyme Ain't Done-5 Stars 6. .357-Break It On Down-3 Stars 7. Go Cut Creator Go-3 Stars 8. The Breakthrough-4 Stars 9. I Need Love-5 Stars 10. Ahh, Let's Get Ill-5 Stars 11. The Do Wop-5 Stars 12. On the Ill Tip-1 Star Usually Skits, Intros, Interludes, and Outros only get a one star rating (definitely if all there is talking). 5 Stars go on my favorites Playlist. It should also be stated that my ratings are based purely on how much I like the Songs. I don't take too much into the popularity of a Song. My ratings are not always a sign that I think a Song or Album are better than another.

I love this album. Sure not all the songs are great, but the ones that hold up are I'm bad, Kanday, go cut kreator, the breakthrough, i need love and the do-wop. Which is more than half the album.
This record shows that LL was a force to be reckoned with.

The real LL,

This is is my favorite release by LL cool J besides the first album Radio. This album follows the same format of the first a lot of dope boom bap with one love song and one song about a girl. This version of LL is hungry, spits lyrics, and just isn't soft. The way he is spitting the lyrics and the way his voice sounds you can tell he was in the booth giving everything that he had to make the songs/album dope. That is the LL I know and love. The current LL that makes 90 percent of his albums love fluff with wack guest appearances is horrible. Even his love songs during this era are more hip hop than the one's he drops now. Ah well, if only he could return to the type of emcee he was on releases like this.
Standouts Bad Kanday I need love My rhyme ain't done

LL defies the sophomore slump,

Though more predictable and less intriguing than RADIO, BIGGER AND DEFFER is an excellent follow up to a classic. This album was also a huge hit, peaking at #3 on the Hot 200 and selling Platinum. The production is much fuller here than the previous disc, but thankfully LL's commanding voice is never lost in the mix.
Two classic singles were scored from this disc, including the macho anthem "I'm Bad" (#84 Pop, #4 R&B) and the genuinely tender crossover hit "I Need Love" (#14 Pop, #1 R&B). In addition to the hits, BIGGER AND DEFFER finds LL at his best when he's attacking the more hard-hitting, "Rock The Bells"-like rhymes like "Get Down," "The Breakthrough" and (my personal favorite) "Ahh, Let's Get Ill." And with "My Rhyme Ain't Done" and "The Bristol Hotel," LL's wickedly humorous side (really only hinted at on Radio) starts to fully emerge. The mixing of genres on "The Do Wop" sounds a little awkward, but it's an interesting experiment (the type of thing LL would continue to keep trying). On the negative side, the use of samples is much more obvious here than on the more discreet RADIO. The James Brown sample on "Kandy" works far better than it should, but the modified Chuck Berry sample on the lame "Go Cut Creator Go" was a bad idea from the beginning. However, BIGGER AND DEFFER unifies nicely as a whole and was a big chart success, blowing the notion of a sophomore jinx right out of the water. RADIO is definitely the place to start, but BIGGER AND DEFFER is another prime example of vintage LL.

One of the Greatest Rap Albums Ever!,
By
This review is from: Bigger & Deffer (Audio CD)
This was my very first rap album. After listening to it just once, I was hooked. His fluidity is amazing on this album. If you ask me he was way ahead of his time. I will never say anything bad about LL, his longevity and hit list is too great. There is a good amount of versatility on this album, something rap of today lacks. Not one of the songs have anything similar except rapping. His hooks are always solid. His word play is stellar. LL has always been underrated and its really a shame. If you've never bought an LL album, this is a great one to start with. If you are not familiar with this old school classic, you should do yourself a favor and get it. This is seriously one of the greatest rap albums and I think anyone who has it or hears it would agree.

Brings back memories,

Bigger and Deffer was possibly the first album that I ever loved. I stole my sister's copy of this when I was about 5, and it remains one of my all-time favorites. It starts off "I'm Bad," which is a rather rediculous-sounding boast of being tough, but it is entertaining nonetheless. "Kanday" has a great beat, as does "The Bristol Hotel" (though this one is sampled from Wilson Pickett's "Get Me Back on Time, Engine Number Nine"). "I Need Love" is kind of sappy, but even after all these years, this album remains one of my favorite ones to listen to from start to finish.

Not the tired, indistiguishable stuff currently out there. LL is a wordsmith, something sorely missing in today's brand of jams. An excellent album.
