Book Description

Book Three in the USA Today Bestselling Philadelphia Patriots Series of sports romances

Sports journalist Martha Winston loves her career, but her life goes sideways when she inherits a pro soccer team from her father. The team is almost bankrupt and on the skids, but Martha has vowed to save her beloved father's legacy. But she needs to get a financial infusion fast, or else lose the team to the wolves baying at her door.

Former British soccer hero Tony Branch wants to add Martha's team to his growing sports empire. But he wants it strictly on his terms--full control, not a partnership. When Martha turns him down flat, he's determined to change her mind by any means necessary. If that includes using the sexual heat flaring between them, Tony is more than willing to play a game of seduction.

Editorial Reviews

"This contemporary debut from V.K. Sykes---who is the husband/wife writing team of Vanessa Kelly (talented historical romance author) and Randall Sykes---takes some romance clichés (billionaire tycoon, young woman with a painful past, sexy Vegas setting) and puts a fresh spin on them. A delightful read with depth, emotion and more heat than a Vegas summer, CaddyGirls is guaranteed to satisfy. I'm looking forward to more books from this talented duo." ~The Romance Dish, on CaddyGirls

From the Author

Award-winning author V.K. Sykes is really two people - Vanessa Kelly and Randy Sykes, a husband and wife team who write sexy contemporary romance. Randy excels at plot and characterization, but tends to fall down on the job when it comes to that pesky old thing called emotion. That's where Vanessa steps in. She usually writes the sex scenes too, since Randy is a bit uncomfortable when it comes to that sort of stuff.

Their second book, Hardball, was a winner of both the Kindle Book Review Best Indie Book Contest and the Silken Sands Self-published Star Contest.  Vanessa also writes award-winning historical romance for Kensington Zebra.  Her latest book, His Mistletoe Bride, is now on shelves.

3.0 out of 5 stars Guess I was looking for more heat November 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
For the past few days, I have been reading V.K. Sykes' Bigger Than Beckham. I was able to finish it today and I have been trying to figure out what to say about this book. So, before I get into that let me share what the book is about and what I thought of the story.

Martha Winston a sport journalist who happen to inherit her father's soccer team. Knowing not much about soccer except that her father loved the sport and promise to keep it going after his death. However, the team hits some financial hard times that send the vultures around to try to collect the team.

Tony Branch, former British soccer, has a desire to own an American soccer team and he has an opportunity to collect a team. Tony makes an offer to purchase Martha's team, but she refuses. Can't understand why she would want to keep a team sport that she has no clue to run. Is it possible for them to come an agreement?

As I have been reading Bigger Than Beckham for the past few days, I was trying to figure what I would say about the book. I have to be honest, I had a hard time getting into the book. I really tried. I wanted to love the book. However, it just wasn't working for me. It could have been the soccer thing or just me. I guess I was looking for more tension in the hero and heroine after all he was trying to take her team away from her. They just kinda worked things out between them. I liked the story enough to check other books by the author and I might find something that calls my name. So, I leave you today and I hope you find an enjoyable read.

Love this book Although I would have liked a double wedding at the end. I understand the next book is about the new AGM of the Patriots, but I was almost hoping love for Rex.

More About the Author

V.K. Sykes is really two people - Vanessa Kelly and Randy Sykes, a husband and wife team who write USA Today Bestselling contemporary romance. The second book in their Philadelphia Patriots Series of sports romances won the Kindle Book Review Best Indie Books of 2012 Contest, in the romance category. Vanessa also writes award-winning, Regency-set historical romance for Kensington Zebra under her own name. Her first novel, Mastering the Marquess, hit the shelves in April 2009, and she was subsequently named by Booklist as one of the "new stars of historical romance."

Vanessa was born a Jersey girl, but not in Tony Soprano country. Rather, she grew up in a gorgeous little colonial town just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. After completing her Master's in English literature, Vanessa headed to Toronto to enter a doctoral program, and stayed in the frozen north. Eventually, she found her way into the public sector, and spent many years writing reports and briefs.

Randy started out as a prairie boy, with a heritage in the starkly beautiful wheat fields of southern Saskatchewan, Canada. As a graduate student in economics, he migrated east to prestigious McGill University. After completing his Master's in labor economics, he ended up working in the public sector in the nation's capital of Ottawa. Writing endless reports and speeches honed his writing skills, but too often bored him senseless. When he finally turned his pen (or rather his keyboard) to fiction, life changed in a hurry. His "I can do this!" quickly became "Holy cow, this is hard!" And before he knew it, he was immersed in a strange land of romance fiction writers, almost all women, learning why books require such things as emotion and conflict to get readers to actually pay money to read them.

And this is where a romance-writing partnership makes such good sense. Do guys like to write about emotion? Not so much. Plotting? Yes. Humor? You bet. Murder and mayhem? Definitely. But when it comes to elaborating on matters of the heart, most guys would rather find a game on TV. Any game. Randy fits the stereotype. But, fortunately, he has the luxury of leaving those big blank sections for the emotion expert to work her magic. And strange though it might seem to Randy, Vanessa actually likes writing about emotion and (thankfully) doesn't mind doing the sex scenes, either.
