5.0 out of 5 stars Yep . . . . . THEY STILL GOT IT!!
I didn't expect "Bigger Than The Devil" to come close to "Speak English or Die" (Won't SOMEBODY please re-release that album on CD??), but it blew me away nonetheless. DEFINITELY looking forward to seeing them live, as the new material is as offensive and non P.C. as the last album. My only complaint is that there aren't enough ballads on there...

3.0 out of 5 stars What ever happened to sell-tick frost?
This cd is ok, but not as raw or a good as Speak English or Die (a five star great album of my high school days). meh - don't pay a lot and you'll be fine.

My only complaint is that there aren't enough ballads on there. All the more reason to see 'em live. Best tracks are "Monkeys Rule", the title track, "The Song that Don't go Fast", and the classic "Aren't you Hungry", an original S.o.D. tune re-made by M.o.D. and includes the riff from Anthrax's "Imitation of Life" which Charlie stole from Billy when he wrote it. Sped up and heavier, it brings back great memories of thrash and grindcore before (c)rap "metal" took over. BUY IT NOW and see them LIVE!! Then, and only then, will you find out whatever happened to Celtic Frost . . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Kill The A**holes!!!!, June 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bigger Than the Devil (Audio CD)
In an age of feel good crap from Brittany Spears, Spice Girls, Back (door) Street Boys, and whoever else casts themselves an angel, S.O.D. comes out full steam ahead and shows us what hard rock, metal and thrash are all about. Thank God the guys decided to pick it up again, and I hope they'll not wait another 15 years to churn out the next one. Best hardcore thrash I've heard in years. Scott Ian has done great re-engergizing himself after a mild effort on Anthrax's Vol. 8. Charlie still hasn't missed a beat, Dan Lilker looks crazier than ever, and Billy Milano can outscream Pantera's Phil Anselmo any day!!! Keep up the good work guys, and don't wait so long on the next one!!!!!! Kill the a**holes!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars they haven't lost anything over the past 14 years, December 24, 2004

if you liked Speak English Or Die, you will probably dig this album. yeah, there are some subtle differences. the guitar sound isn't the same classic 80's thrash metal tone that made Scott Ian's rhythm playing famous. it's a little more sludgy. also, Billy Milano's vocals are a little meaner sounding with a lower, throaty growl compared to the S.E.O.D. album. but overall, the S.O.D. spirit is still there. the songs are still great, they're still heavy, funny, and offensive. probably one of the best metal albums of 1999. you may or not agree, but it has to be at least the best album on Nuclear Blast records that came out in '99.

Wow. Wow, wow, wow. This is a GREAT CD. I would honestly give this 6 stars if I could. I love this CD and I love S.O.D., if you want to challenge me on it, I'll show you my S.O.D. tattoo. So what's great about this record? What's not great about this record? Every song (except "The Song That Don't Go Fast") is like the best crossover song you've ever heard only FASTER. The reason S.O.D. only put out two studio albums in 14 years is because they can say everything that needs to be said in 35 seconds. "Shenanigans" is priceless. "The Crackhead Song" and "Kill the A$$holes" are great. "Fugu." Yup. And they polish it all off with "The Moment of Truth," which might just have the best chorus I've ever heard, plus great lyrics about one of the most amazing event in history - the Spartan's stand at Thermopylae. How about that? A$$-kicking crossover and a history lesson all in one. If you don't own this, then you're just a sad sack of crap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice to have them back, July 22, 1999

This review is from: Bigger Than the Devil (Audio CD)
Good album, not as good as the first, but definitely good. A few of the highpoints-Bigger than the Devil, Kill all the A**holes, Evil is In (sounds like classic Slayer, best song), and Shennanigans. Classic thrash metal, they didn't update their sound at all. Dan Lilker finally got a better bass sound which is nice. That fuzzy crap sound he had on the original album always annoyed me. Hope to see em on tour.

BTW the video for Live at Budokon rules.

5.0 out of 5 stars "...You Can Keep A Nickle In Your Car!", September 23, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Bigger Than the Devil (Audio CD)
When the almighty S.O.D released "Bigger Than The Devil", the metal universe was in messed up. It was ruled with snoty rappers, dj's, and lyrics that over did teen agnst. Then, seemingly, out of nowhere, the almighty S.O.D returned and released a very worthy follow up to the immortal "Speak English Or Die!"

No, this isn't your dad's S.O.D. It's a much more heavier version. Scott's guitar playing is a little more slower, more sludge like. Bily sounds like homicidal maniac on this record. Charlie's performance is very good ( I mean, it is Charlie Benante, after all), along with Danny's (though not as illustrious as last time.) Scott & Charlie haven't really played this heavy in Anthrax, except on "We've Come For You All", current Anthrax studio album.

My favorite song's on here are "Bigger Than The Devil", "The Crackhead Song", and "Charlie Don't Cheat."

In short buy with confidence

4.0 out of 5 stars GWA HA HA!, June 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Bigger Than the Devil (Audio CD)
After fourteen years, S.O.D. return with a second album of thrash mayhem. The music is stylistically similar to what came before - hard, fast metal with heavy guitars and mostly short songs. There's more humorous lyrics this time too. Much of the fun revolves around mocking other metal bands, in tracks like 'King at the King' (King Diamond at Burger King), 'Seasoning the Obese' (a hilariously perfect parody of Slayer) and the epic 'Raise Your Sword', which parodies the entire fantasy prog-metal genre. Other tracks feature ludicrous rants against rednecks and Republicans, as well as tributes to Michael Hutchence and Phil Hartman (remember 'The Ballad of Jimi Hendrix'?). As before, the instrumental playing is spot-on and perhaps even a little heavier. While not quite as good as the first one, anyone who enjoyed Speak English or Die ought to get a smile out of this sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sgt D and the Troops of Doom finally Return!, December 21, 1999

They are bigger than the devil, more ominous than their home town of New York City, as brutal as a runaway sherman tank. S.O.D. trimuphantly return after a more than ten year hiatus to reclaim their throne as one of the most outlandish and heaviest bands to roam the metal landscape. S.O.D.'s impact on metal world in the fall of 1985 with "Speak English or Die" set a new stardard for judging metal and laid the groundwork for all later thrash/death metal and hardcore releases. Originally slated as a one-off side project for Anthrax members Scott Ian and Charlie Benante during the recording of "Spreading the Disease" S.O.D. has now achieved cult status and has returned for a long overdue encore. "Bigger Than the Devil" revives the lost spirit of an era seemingly long past in heavy music. Never-ending political bantering with an oft less that P.C. tilt effortlessly combined with a sadistic sence of humor and loads of street-edged attitude that could only fester in the New York City vecinity. The reunited S.O.D. not only seek to reclaim their place on high, they clear the ballroom and castle grounds of any and all competition. Yes, there may be great many bands out there selling a great many more records than the infamous Sgt. D and his Troops of Doom, but S.O.D. have proven to withstand the test of time without faltering in the way of integrity. They have carved themselves out entire chapters in metal and hardcore folklore. Seriously, how can you argue with the two new "ballads" included on this installment of thrash-o-mania in terms of historical and comedic value? Greuling guitar licks deomstrating sheer speed and true metalic finesse presented by Ian are effortlessly offset by unrelenting thrash inspired drums a la Benante. And then of course there is the dominating presence of vocalists Billy Milano's (former M.O.D.) growl which kicks you in the face like the steel tiped boot of an enraged construction worker. This is all accuentaed by the bands unmistakable satiric sence of humor which takes a stab at everyone and everything from drug abuse to political-correctness to other metal bands and slays every contraversey in its path. Packing in twenty-five songs into forty minutes is nothing short of a feat either. Mear seconds of blinding noise and abreviated experimentations on the basic song form helped establish the myth that has become S.O.D. and "Bigger Than the Devil" continues the tradition in style.

After having made an impact on so many of the metal and hardcore worlds fledging sub-genres S.O.D. have finally returned to prove to the world once wasn't a fluke. So if you've never experienced Sgt. D now is as good a time as any to educate yourself and get a good laugh in the process.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sgt. D returns to kill again!, June 1, 1999
This review is from: Bigger Than the Devil (Audio CD)
What a glorious day it was when I saw the hilarious rip-off cover for Bigger Than the Devil. I had waited years for this album, and while it's not quite as good as Speak English Or Die, it certainly is S.O.D. Billy's vocals are deeper now, and the music is even harsher than before. Sgt D. returns with blast beats and unabashedly METAL riffing to show the youngins how it's done. It's good to have him back.
