5.0 out of 5 stars great album
If you have "Underachievers Please Try Harder"--because it enjoyed a wider release, many people get this album first--then you'll find much to love on "Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi." Much of the same breathy, mellow melodies from "Underachievers" are here, but so are more intricate songs with inventive rhythms and textures. This is a solid album; I count it as one of my favorites.

2.0 out of 5 stars Less restraint , more feeling
For the most part many of these songs demonstrate the colder, more distant aspects of pop songwriting, however warm the "vibe" would have us believe, with their autopilot musicality and predictable tunes. On the few songs that do feel more inspired then the generic majority, it is definitely possible to see future pop majesty this band is capable of achieving, albeit it...

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine debut..., September 30, 2005

As with most people, I bought this album after enjoying their sophomore release ("Underachievers Please Try Harder") tremendously, and found this to be at least as good, and in some ways, better.

This album is a lot less pretentious, a bit more tuneful, and lacks the filler of "Underachievers..." For all those who cry wolf at any similarites between this band and Belle & Sebastian, sit and spin. I think B&S would sell their souls to make anything this vital again.

"Eighties Fan" is a nice homage to The Jesus And Mary Chain, with it's "Just Like Honey" drum intro, while "Happy New Year" kicks the album off like no other pop song could (or has, in recent memory). My personal fave has to be "Pen And Notebook", with brilliantly simplistic lyrics, and a pristine, very spare production that can't be touched.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Album, November 16, 2008
This review is from: Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi (Audio CD)
Anyone who is a fan of Belle & Sebastian will love this band. This is Camera Obscura's first album, and they really put a lot of great songs on this record. Tracyanne Campbell, the lead singer on most of the band's songs, does a great job giving life to the lyrics. The music is pretty low-key, not many electric guitars and such, but it's a good album for a rainy day.

This sounds like your going back to the times when life was laid back, happy and care free. . . somewhere outside the polluted city. . . amongst the trees, green grasses, birds, sea, blue skies . . . . . nature at its finest. . . how life was so simple then . . its the sound of this album. . .

Just purchased "Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi" after having seen them live and purchasing "Let's Get Out Of This Country" and am elated that I did. Usually, I "discover" a band from its inception, yet Camera slipped under my radar. This cd is fantastic from start to finish. The songwriting is clever and erudite and the music a perfect complement to Tracyanne's voice. I highly recommend this or "Let's Get Out..." as a starting point to enjoy catchy but complex pop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Debut, September 17, 2010

Admittedly, I am a sucker for debuts, largely because I believe that in many cases they capture the essence of a band's sound. While some of their later releases may have garnered more positive critical reviews, Camera Obscura's debut CD, "Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi" is very good. Although there are some electric guitar parts, the overall sound is more acoustic, with occasional orchestral backup. Among the multiple terms that I have seen used to describe the music of Camera Obscura, "melancholic dream pop" seems to be the most apt. The lyrics generally are poignant, and Tracyanne Campbell's vocals are beautiful. In contrast to their later CDs, however, her vocals are counterpointed on many of the songs by the vocals of John Henderson, which in my opinion adds to the overall quality of the sound. Unfortunately, the last three songs on the CD are the weakest, which takes away from its overall pleasure quotient. However, all of the other songs are good, indeed, very good. I highly recommend this CD.

On the few songs that do feel more inspired then the generic majority, it is definitely possible to see future pop majesty this band is capable of achieving, albeit it in a watered down familiar way to anyone who has ever picked up an older Belle and Sebastian album, whose shadow will hopefully prove underwhelming on future releases.
