The Best Diamond Rio Retrospective On The Market,
By

This review is from: 16 Biggest Hits (Audio CD)
Diamond Rio had a successful 16-year (1990-2006) stint on the Arista Nashville label. Perhaps most impressively, this six-member band (Marty Roe, Gene Johnson, Jimmy Olander, Brian Prout, Dan Truman, and Dana Williams) maintained the same lineup throughout this run. Diamond Rio emerged from its bluegrass roots to the elite level in country by combining strong musicianship with tight harmonies. They also possess, in lead singer Marty Roe, a distinctive tenor of exceptional power and conviction.
The group put out two Greatest Hits retrospectives over the years, but this collection is the best cd of the group's highlights, including three top ten hits ("Nowhere Bound," "Oh Me, Oh My, Sweet Baby," "This Romeo Ain't Got Julie Yet") left off those prior sets. The tunes found here showcase the group's astounding diversity, with upbeat honkytonkers such as "Meet In The Middle" and "Mirror Mirror," heart tugging ballads like "In A Week Or Two" and "You're Gone," smile enducers "Norma Jean Riley," and "Unbelievable," plus gospel-fused spinetinglers "One More Day" and "I Believe." Collectively, they provide a rural rollercoaster of emotions. 16 Biggest Hits is a great introduction to the musical brilliance of Diamond Rio. Hopefully, they will continue to make quality music for Word Records, their new label as of August 30.

Close to perfect,

After releasing the 14 track Diamond Rio - Greatest Hits in 1997 and the 13 track Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 in 2006, the 2007 "16 Biggest Hits" is the closest their label has come to getting it right... although it's still not perfect. And if there is a country group that deserves a "perfect" compilation, it's Diamond Rio who ruled the country charts back in the '90s.
Popularity has been a bit elusive for them, as it has been for so many of the neo-traditional acts of the '90s, during this era of pop/rock oriented country radio. But one listen to the beautiful harmonies and incredible musicianship on this collection and you'll know why their '90s success was so well deserved. "16 Biggest Hits" certainly includes their "biggest" hits from the earliest singles that took country radio by storm ("Meet in the Middle", "Mirror Mirror") to later, more reflective tracks such as "Beautiful Mess" and "One More Day". "16 Biggest Hits" also includes 3 singles that, for reasons that I can't fathom, were not included on either of the earlier hits collections: "This Romeo Ain't Got Julie Yet", "Nowhere Bound", and "Oh Me, Oh My, Sweet Baby". Finally! Unfortunately this CD does not completely replace Greatest Hits I/II because missing in action are essentials "Night is Falling In my Heart", "Imagine That", "That's What I Get for Loving You", "Bubba Hyde", and... well, most of the tracks on GH II. Still "16 Biggest" is the way to go if you want to pick up a single Diamond Rio compilation disc.

The title of one of the songs on this CD sums it up-unbelievable. Diamond Rio is a marvelous group with a unique style, and this album captures it all. "Beautiful Mess," "I Believe," "You're Gone," and "In a Week or Two" are some of the great songs you'll find on it. I really enjoy it and guarantee you will too.
