no "bible" for commuting,
This review is from: The Bike to Work Guide (Paperback)
After reading through this book, I have found it not the "bible" filled with pearls of wisdom which I hoped it would be. While the chapters are clear and concise, the information borders on common sense and spares the reader of any real depth. The maintenance section was laughable. It particularly disappointed me on how sparse the biking safety chapter was in lacking basic advice. It surprised me considering these nuggets of advice on how not to get run over was my main reasoning for buying this book- as I assumed others have too. I have found much better information quickly online. While the cover was flashy, the lack of helpful advice makes this book better spent glancing over quickly and not buying.

I have been commuting by bicycle for years. This book covers all the pertinent details, with the proper emphasis - it was not written to sell a bunch of expensive accessories. This book pulls together all the details in a convenient way. It covers safety, emergency repairs, and selecting gear. If you, or someone you know, is considering using your bicycle for practical purposes, this book is an economical resource well worth buying. I would have given this book 4.5 stars if possible - I wish it had been better printed and illustrated.

This book, more than anything, is just an introduction to the idea of bicycling. As another reviewer posted, it does not contain anything which you can't find in 5 minutes on the Internet.

I appreciate the spirit of the book. I do. As a newbie bike commuter, I am eagerly devouring anything on the topic, this book included. While I can't argue with the advice, there was nothing particularly helpful--no special tips or tricks, just stuff that seems to be regurgitated elsewhere on the web (for free!).If you prefer to read a book (as opposed to a blog) and haven't yet read anything on the subject, this could be good for you. If you're looking for novel advice and have already googled around a bit--don't bother. |
