Fun Vietnamese picture book,

We first saw this book in Hanoi and decided we had to have it. Hans Kemp has taken some great photos that really capture the every day sights in Vietnam. The Vietnamese rely heavily on their motor bikes the way we rely on big huge trucks. It is always amazing to see what can be carried by bike. This book has been fun to have on our table and always is a topic of conversation among our friends.

Vietname Visit,
This review is from: Bikes of Burden (Hardcover)
I just visited Vietnam in April 2005. This book depicts exactly what the "Bikes of Burden" represent. I was amazed at how well the pictures capture how these wonderful and resorseful people are. If you have been there lately you will love this book!!!

This book was a must have after seeing much of this craziness first hand in Vietnam and Cambodia. You see this kind of thing everywhere over there but you can't ever seem to capture it on film since it is usually flying down the road heading the other direction.

This book captured the essence of urban Vietnam. It was hilarious and amazing what could be transported on the bikes!! I originally saw the book in an airport in Vietnam for $50, but knew I could find it at home for less.

Bikes of Burden Review,

Having just returned from Ho Chi Minh City, this book perfectly captures the amazing street scenes we witnessed and found just unbeleivable. Every street has bikes and scooters with mind blowing cargoes of goods of every description carried on the most flimsy looking machines, some carrying groups of people, 3, 4 and even 5 including babies and children. We tried filming, but where do you stop, so many varied goods being transported. This really is a must have book for anyone wanting to capture the everyday street scenes of this frantic city. It is beautifully produced and a great "coffee table" book which fascinates everyone who looks at it.

It makes me wonder if a book of photos of huge portions of food stacked high on the plates of obese all-you-can-eat buffet customers would be funny in someplace like Africa - probably not.
The book has humor but it's basically because it's so different from what we experience. A moped in Vietnam carries more than the average SUV does here. I like to look at it as a document of cultural resourcefulness and efficiency. It's a good gift for someone who rides motorcycles and, like a good knock-knock joke, doesn't really take very long to get through. |
