Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Rockwell's newest picture book shows tigers in a wide variety of locales riding an even greater variety of bikes. Little cubs on tricycles soon give way to bigger ones on two-wheelers and parents riding bikes with baby seats. Unicycles, tandems, high-speed racers and slower, clumsier delivery bikes are all introduced. Even the more unusual types join the collection: the stationary exercise bike, a trick motorcycle, a motor scooter, trail bikes and mopeds. The colorful illustrations are humorous and will continue to please with each rereading. Ages 36.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-KBikes is vintage Rockwell: bright, amusing watercolors that convey a comforting tone and illustrate a very simple text. As in the earlier books (Boats 1982, Trucks 1984, Cars 1984, Planes 1985, Big Wheels 1986, Fire Engines 1986, all Dutton), animals, in this case lovely striped tigers, ``people'' the text. The stylistic use of the first person plural heightens the appeal to the very young, and the final switch to the singular (as the young tiger from whose perspective the text unfolds says, ``Today is my birthday. Today I got a bicycle with training wheels'') reinforces the friendliness of the book. Various kinds of bikes, including tricycles, unicycles, motocycles, mopeds, and trail bikes are included in this introduction to a favorite topic. Rockwell excels at presenting accurate, interesting information in an appealing format for young patrons. Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School Library, South Portland, Maine

2.0 out of 5 stars cute, but...., April 27, 2004
This review is from: Bikes: 2 (Hardcover)
This book does have adorable illustrations and is fun to read again and again (and again... and again...) to my 3-year-old students. My real problem is that only some of bike-riding tigers are wearing helmets! The motorcyclists and racing bikers have them, but not small children and parents. If you are concerned with setting a good, safe example for your kids, you may want to reconsider this book.
